Are you looking for something like this??
It have 2meters wing span
is 1:4 copy of real microlight. Very easy to build and very easy to fly

Here's an update; I received my Mentor-G a few weeks ago. The plane is huge (at least for me). The engine started real easy. I flew it four times this week. The maiden flight was a piece of cake; no trim issues. It flew great; slow; fast; loops; rolls. It landed easy as can be. I love it.

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
For What Its Worth - I'm 81, been in model planes longer than I care to remember. Control line and for last 20 years RC, nitro engines. Then decided to go gas. Wife "Another @#$ engine?" Yup. She's been putting up with me for 53+ years, so figured one more blip wouldn't tilt the scales too far. Did lots of reading. Bought a Mentor G from Maxford USA.com, approx 250. This guy has an 83" wingspan. Hey, the eyeballs aren't what they used to be. Wanted a rear carb engine and after talking to a number of buds at the field settled on a 26 cc RCGF from BP industies.com - 226. It's all in the basement, ready to go. The engine isn't broken in. Have run it some but still trying to get the idle down below 2100. Swinging an 18 x 6 RCGF Prop. So far turning around 7100 - 7150. Just have to figure out how to hold my mouth when I got that screwdriver in my hand.
If can get a little more snow to melt and the winds to slow down (today, gusts to 50mph) , will give it a try.
Good luck with your choice.

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
K guys well I am getting ready to pull the trigger on my giant big stik. I am making my list of things I need. I am on the servo's.
I will need 7 total. I am not going to use flaps.
1 - Standard servo for the throttle
I am thinking using all the same for the other 6 servo's Is that a dumb idea?
What should I go with? I need to try to keep the cost of them down. (My total is adding up real quick)
Should I invest in a prop balancer, and a CG stand, or is their another way?
I am going to be using the DLE30, What would be the best prop to use with it on the stik?
THANKS EVERYONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

George,
I like to use same brand servos when possible, although I have mixed and matched too [X(]
In the case of the Giant Stik the four servos on the wing should probably be matching servos with at least 50oz of torque (could go more). The elevator and rudder call for at least 70oz of torque so you'll have to find a servo that will meet those demands. I would probably find six matching servos that were 70oz or more to use on the wings and tail. As for the servos on the throttle and nose gear, you could pick a couple of the less expensive ones. For example: Use the Futaba S3010 on control surfaces and the S3004 for throttle and nose gear.
My personal preference is to go with a brand name servo ie., Hitec, Futaba, JR/Spektrum or Airtronics (check out the Hitec 485HB.... pretty good price). I like the Futaba S3010 and the Spektrum DS821. I've had great results with both.
Yes! Get a prop balancer and balance your props. Using a CG machine is not so important but you MUST balance the plane and be in the proper range... If you don't use a CG stand, you can put a small piece of tape on your balance point and lift the plane with your fingers. It's a bit tricky with a bigger plane, but doable.
I don't have experience with a DLE30 so will let someone else suggest a prop.
Have fun, and Happy New Year!
Ben

Brocketman
Thanks a ton for the info. I will look into thise servo's. Is metal geared servos a must for this plane?
I will be building the plane as a tail dragger.
thanks again!

Metal gear servos are not a must for this plane. Just be sure to use servos with enough torque.
The tail dragger will be great! [sm=thumbup.gif]

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
Update!
I will probably be going with this plane.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/ite...0293&cobrand=1
I can save about 300.00 going this route instead of building it my self.
Now anyone have any experience with this engine? The guy says he has flown it for two seasons, no problems, runs and flys perfect. He is just getting out of gas and goiing electric.
He has it setup with flaps, should I y- them with the ailerons, and do away with the flaps? I have never used flaps before, not even sure how to use them to be honest.
Thanks
George

I just read the first couple of pages and the comment was made that gasoline are usually larger size airplanes. I'm throwing out there that it's not necessarily true and with something like the 9cc gasser, a 60 size airplane would fly well with one. No sarcasm at all, just throwing out an option. Excuse me for not reading the last page or two, I felt that there was info to add without reading through the whole thread

Got yah, no problem, I just did not get it is all. I did not know they made gasoline engines that small. Would something like that work on the big stik? ( not the giant big stik obviously)
Thanks

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
Probably would actually I gave up Nitro in just about everything but two helicopters. Ever since flying gasser airplanes I just can't see myself going to any other fuel burning engines. The reliability is superb and tuning is simple. Since finding out about the 9cc coming out, I've just been looking for the right airframe to try one out in but I've been so stuck on flying my 40% that I haven't gotten around to it yet. Good luck getting your bird in the air, you're going to love it!

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
9cc works out to be .55 cubic inches. And 545 grams complete is 19.25 ounces. That seems like it would be sweet in a .45 sized plane. and I like that price (USD):$165.47[/b] Would do ok in a .60 size plane also, just not as much power as you would normaly have. It is a nice looken engine. Nice to see the sizes getting down there. And $$

The servo's for the ailerons and flaps are different, will I need to change out the flpa servos to match the aileron servos, or just Y them as is? Or should I just leave the flaps?
What do the flaps do for the plane? Is it smart to use them? How do I use them?
Thanks
George

I've never had one myself but all of my friends that did loved them! Supposed to excellent fliers, should be able to take you through all of the beginning through intermediate stages. With that motor, should run and fly great!

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
Leave the flaps! Flaps are awesome and allow for slow, controlled flight and landings so use them for landing. Set them up on the switch. If the flap servos match, leve them in place

I had our best flyer at our field, and an aeronautical engineer, explain it to me this way regarding flaps. They do nothing for lift, but act as a drag (brake) to slow you down. I had another warbird flier help me with mine on my warbird. On the base leg use half flap. Use full flap as you cross the threshold of the runway. Other than that leave them up. You can practice with their effect up high to see the effect on the plane.

Yup, not needed for take off. Although I've seen several folks leave them down through a touch-and-go. Sometimes there is too much going on while you're doing that. Once airborne bring them up.

I totally disagree with your expert pilot and aeronautical engineer. The first 20 degrees of flaps add lift AND drag, and lower the stall speed. He's obviously never been in a real airplane and raised the flaps while flying...

RE: Want to get a gasser airplane, I have questions!
Let me just say that I trust his opinion a heck of a lot more than anyone else knowing his background.
There is a differing answer to every question and problem in R/C depending on how many folks you ask. No where in my post did I say anything about a full size aircraft and the effect of 20 percent flaps on stall speed of that plane. We are talking about a model plane here.
