Default G-23 idle issues

I have a g-23 that when I got it 8 yrs ago would idle like a sowing machine.

Now after a 5 min flight at 3/4 she wants to die at idle.

Also the front seal squeaks when I rotate the prop just after a run.

Just rebuilt carb and running 30:1 with 92 octane and fuel treatment for ethanol.

Help!!!!

Sounds like it might be a bit too lean on the low needle, so try richeneing it just a bit.

Tried that. Made the idle worse.

But thanks.

The gas I was using wasnt old. But not new either.

I'll give it a try. And will leave out the treatment.

Thanks.

Some brands of gasare better than others. Try Penzoil 2 cycle oil (30-1) for air cooled engines too. Good Luck Capt,n

What size prop are you using and what is the idle rpm.

16x6 top flight

About 2,600 to keep it from quitting.

Thanks

It will idle better with the plug gap a little great than .5mm. Try .6mm or .024"

I use a Dynathrust 16/8 on my older G23, and idle below 2000 rpm. You may want to try a heavier composite (MA or ACP) prop over the wood one you are using. I also use Coleman's lantern fuel and Pennzoil 2 cycle aircooled oil at 32:1 with no treatment added or needed; fuel lasts forever. Many will argue against the use of low octane Coleman fuel, but the G23 is low compression and does not need higher octane.

Like Spaceworm suggested, I too use a 16x8 prop on my G23 which is run on 87 octane pump gas / Redline oil mixed at 32:1 and the engine idles at about 2,000 rpm.

Any thought about the front shaft seal squeaking right after a run?

The front seal should not be leaking.

A leaking seal will cause hard starting and needle valve adjust ment problems.

You would have to do a crankcase vacuum/pressure test to see if the seal is leaking.

Might try a little oil around the front hub?

No leaking. Just squeaking.

Thanks

During the 8 years was the engine in constant use or was it in storage. If it was not in use maybe the seal is just a bit stiff from aging. The good thing is that it is not leaking, that's the Zenoah quality talking.

You may have a fornt bearing that's going bad. It sounds like it heats up and gets tighter durn the flight.

Thanks. But it really sounds like rubber rubbing against the hub.

2 things come to mind. The diaphragm in the carb seems to not be set up correctly. Also if you had a recent crash or propellor strike it is possible the shaft is bent. Either way I would ask Antique. He is the best when it comes to Zenoah engines. If there is any friction on the hub other than when the piston comes up on the compression stroke something is wrong. Again ask Antique.

Apply some silicone spray to where the shaft and seal meet. You may need to do that a few times. The sound or squeal should then go away. Capt,n
