Default Ignition battery

Just starting into gassers......have a new Zenoha 20 cc. noticed the instructions state to use a 4.8 ni-cad battery for the ignition system

Would it be possible to use a 2 cell lipo battery with a voltage regulator down to 5 volts to operate the system...

My thinking is a full charged 4.8 is over 5 volts

Thanks

4.8 nicad or nimh will be fine, (most ignitions generally don't like to go above 6 volts)
A fully charged 4.8 is perfect. Trust your manufacturers manual, Zenoah know their stuff.

The Zenoah G-20 ignition really eats up a battery, make sure you use a higher capacity than normal. I'd recommend an 1800-2000mah. The small pack AA batteries are available in Ni Cad and NIMH. A normal size pack is 100-1200mah, but the G-20 ignition will eat that in a couple flights. This has been noticed on several G-20's at the field.

Yes you can use a Lipo or LiFe two cell pack with a voltage regulator. 5.0v is a fairly optimum voltage for them. The CDI ignition module draws something like 350ma at low speed and something like 650ma to 750ma at full speed. It varies depending on the CDI though. Older CDi's could draw more current too. The newer CDI's tend to be more frugal though.
Like the others you need at least a 2000mah capacity pack regardless of the battery type you use. The CDI can draw down the battery pack pretty fast depending on your flying style.

Toni Clarke recommends using a single cell 3.7 volt 2,000-2,500 mAh lipo battery which gives approx. 90 mins of run time on the G20, however several people like myself have replaced the stock Zen ignition with an RC exl ignition system which gives approx. double the run time on a 4.8 volt 800 mAh battery.

I have been moving away from ignition batteries. Since I run dual 5-cell NIMH for my RX I have some excess voltage and amps. I just run a UBEC like these:

So far so good for me.
