Just bought one of these of ebay. Arrived yesterday, opened today and turned it over by hand. Very notchy feeling and sticking now and again, that's with no plug in surely it should be smooth to turn over?
Me thinks that the front bearing is knackered.... any thoughts?

Mine did the same thing. I put a few drops of oil in where the plug goes, turned it over a few times and it was fine. It seems they don't put any oil in the engine when they build them. I've got over a gal. of fuel through it now and it runs beautiflly. Hope this helps

Wow Cotman, to be honest i thought something must be wrong bearing wise it was That Notchy and lumpy feeling. Added some synthetic to the spark plug opening, turned it over for a few minutes, let it sit for half an hour. Turned it over again Voila all fixed and smooth as a babys you know what.

Cheers for that, I had forseen ebay disputes and the like.

One other question while i'm here is the supplied plug ok? or should it be replaced immediately with an NGK?

Cheers

I wouldnt use anything other than a NGK so I replaced mine straight away. A new NGK plug is cheap and last for ages so not worth taking the risk of Chinese plug that may start missing or cause interference

I have been using the no name plug that came with it with no issues. However I have a couple of NGK CM6's for backup. Just a heads up, Oreilly auto parts sell the NGK CM-6 for $3.59. If the store doesn't stock them they can have it for you the next day. Who knows, maybe the no name is a NGK?

Received my engine, no complaints here so far. Replaced the plug with an NGK and installed the metal throttle and choke arms. I wasn't going to mess with that auto choke off stuff. I plan on a servo operated choke, so I just ground off the stock choke arm and put the metal in place.

Had mine fired up a dozen times or so and have used the auto choke off each time with-out a problem.

Cloud 9, if you go to his post, #236, and hit the "reply with a quote" tab it will show you more of the hyperlink in the text box. Once you see it in blue, copy/paste and fill in the ******** with the word
f l y i n g g i a n t (keep the original "s")
to your address bar, then just cancel the new post, thats how I figured it out and it worked for me anyway.

I purchased two engines on the end-of-the-year special. One at $179 and second one at 65% of plus shipping. What a deal. Steve seems to be an expert.
EX are has beens and a SPERT is a drip under pressure.

Ran mine today for the first time. Took about 7 flips to pop, then choke off and fired right up. Ran two tanks through it. Seems to run just fine to me.

Ran this thing all day today just to really make sure it's gonna be ok. Got a gallon through it total and I gotta be honest, this runs as good if not smoother then my DLE 30's.

How well does it hold it's carb settings? I'm putting one in a P-40, I got it mounted up today and the carb needles are going to be almost inaccessible without drilling holes in the side of the fuselage. I'll be able to get at them with needlenose but it won't be easy.

started mine at 1.1 out on the low, 1.5 out on the high. Turned the high in to about 1.3 to get rid of a slight burble. Mine is mounted in a spitfire. Only acces is with the cowl off. I don't see much adjustment as is normal with gassers.
