AGM30 Gas engine
#52
I would agree we need to have some engines run and flown in airplanes a while before we can start saying they are good. I remember a few other brands having crankshafts that weren't hardened properly having the threaded ends break off. Or having the hub adapter break off. Or they had set themselves up for stress risers where they machined the ends of the crankshaft. Or the crankcase mounting tabs tended to break off in use. Then there was a really good higher end brand that had cylinder and piston fit problems when they tried to use another supplier so they could increase production.
But this AGM engine is really looking pretty good though. I have a strong mind to get one myself.

You hit the nail on the head Earl. I have one of those engines in a CRRC 40cc. What a nightmare that one turned out to be. When I finally got it to run and start decent by changing the timing, it had a real bad vibration. I discovered 1/16" of lateral play in the crankshaft. There were reports of crankshafts breaking on this engine early on. Its set aside till I have time to tear it down. I suspect a bearing seat problem. Too many projects need finishing.

Yeah Earl, that "good higher end brand " is what I have. It is on its way back to the factory for a re-build. At least those guys honor their warranty. Let's hope they have solved their design and manufacturing flaws.

It did not look good there for a while as that higher end brand suddenly went out of business and was bought out right away, and at first they had no support. Even the dealers had more or less given up on them. I am happy they are starting to fix the problems of those engines too. Unfortunately it took them about a year or so before they started providing warranty repair work for the engines that were screwed up. But they could have been less nice about it and changed their name and brand and started back up again as a new engine company instead of keeping the name and trying to fix all the problem for the existing owners.

I have a ESM Cessna 185 IM taking the Saito 150 out of , I think one of these engines will be a perfect replacement. Ill order one in a few days and let you all know how it flies a fairly heavy bird.

For me to try one of these engines I'd have to put it in a beater plane for a while and fly the hell out of it. I went through a bad bout with a DLE30 that kept dieing on me until one time I could not make it back to the runway and my stearman landed in a tree. Through whatever miracle it had only minimal damage. I finally got the problem sorted out replacing the carb with a real walbro carb. I keep a big ultra stick around just for that purpose. I'd rather lose my stick than my stearman.

As a platform assist factory offer they engine to USA market , we plan to import this 20CC engine . engine come with walbro carb, rcexl ignition . pitts muffler . and price around $199 . The engine made by biggest small gas engine factory in China . over 3 million small gas engine build and export per year .
after 2 years test fly this 20CC gas engine.. we have no doubt reliable and durable of this engine . about the support from this factory. they have HUGE in stock engines and parts !!!

So the RCU search engine seems to have let me down. Not finding any info on this motor through the site led me to start another thread. Guess I'll subscribe here and just let the other thread go. Just to avoid a bout of re-typing, if anyone wants to read what I had up to this point (only initial reactions) here is the link: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gas-...-one-team.html

Ran mine today and very pleased, used the stock manual settings (L 1.1 turns out and H 1.5) used 30:1 mineral oil fuel, 18x8 Menz prop
Primed the fuel up to the carb, put on choke, fired on first flip, choke off started and ran on next flip cant beat that for a new engine!
Stock settings are fairly close, I backed out the idle screw as it was running a bit fast, but ran through out the range very well, bit rich on top but ideal for first startup.
Stopped and started it a load of times and it started everytime we flipped it, never got checking timing (will do now back on bench) but cant be far away from the smooth running an easy starting.
Throttle response is really good both up and down also lot less vibration than similar sized engines.
Didnt do any tacho readings as we had to run it in the hangar as we had drizzly rain most of the day (common in NW Ireland) but power could easily be felt holding the tail.
Looking forward to flying it this week, making a custom silencer to fit model so will do some tacho checks before I change them over..

Despite its outdated design, I need a sidecarb for a radial cowl with a short length and big diameter. Otherwise I would have to carve out the firewall and this is an old classic kit. But at $199 for an old-style side-carb, the price is steep. I was hoping it was a typo!!!
