Default Dle 30 side carb

Due to cowl size and shape I have purchased a DLE 30 side mount carb to use on my latest plane. I have heard that these engines have been noted for not running to well.
I noticed this engine has a Tilitson carb on it and wondered if anyone had thoughts on changing it to a Walbro carb. I have been told to mount the engine at a 20 deg angle and that would also help with this engines supposed problems. Any comments are welcome.

Some people loved them, some hated them. I believe the fuel pooling problem was real and quality control on those early DLE engines wasn't the best. You might want to read through some of the old threads about that engine. It wouldn't be my first choice if I needed a shorter engine though I love the later rear intake 30.

Mine runs fine and is still in it's first plane after about 8 years. Has a slight burble in mid-range that I cannot get rid of, however. Gapped the plug at 25 thousandths and that minimized it. Am running a 20x6 in a H-9 Taylorcraft and it pulls like a mule.

Thank you both for the input. Lifer is there anything special that you did to the engine, like mounting it 20 deg of angle that some have suggested. Are you using the tilitson carb or something else.
Thanks for the info.

No, mine is pointing straight down, with a stock muffler and carb. After 4 years I changed the ring to a Bowman and it did increase the power. A no-problem engine.

Mount the engine on a angle...that works good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcNqCJ-Y6ok
