Hi...
Very easy to start... Mine normally starts within 3 flips after being primed. If the engine is still hot I can sometimes get by with 1 flip...
The engine came mounted with Toni Clarks "Easy-Start", but i don´t use it, as the engine starts just as easy without it.
I´m not sure about the power... When breaking in the engine I used a MenzS 26x8 which pulled 33lbs at 6300rpm, using the stock exhausts... That was before I had tweaked the needles properly as the engine was brand new. My preferred prop these days are MenzS 28x8. Don´t know the rpm, but the engine pulls fine with it.
It´s mounted on a 24-28lbs glider tug, and I can go vertical as long as I want after a 30ft ground run.
All in all I like the engine very much...

mine is relatively new, in a hangar 9 cap 232. only 6 flites on it, and three gallons run thru it. needs to be quite wet for priming, and then starts fine. Restarts after warm are only a couple of tries with the spring starter. I will have CH change it over to ignition later this winter, to lose the weight and rpm loss of the spring starter. It pulls the plane just fine, and I have one of the Bison mufflers tapped for smoke fluid . The mufflers are fine tho priced at the top end of the scale .

If you going for any aerobatics, dont put that engine on it!! They are heavy, and dont make any power. For less money you can have a zdz80 and have twice as much power. If you must have a twin on it, and that is a great idea IMO, get a DA100, its a bit more, but makes twice the power also. I have flown the H9 extra with the Gt80, as well as the Sukhoi with one in it. Not a good choice unless your just flying around in circles doing loops and rolls

TWICE the power? come on John! Keep things in perspective! I have a GT80 on my H9 Extra. I flew it this evening and did torque rolls.hovering and knife edge loops. Hardly underpowered. It will not rocket out of a hover but it will climb straight up from it. It took about 5 gallons of gas thru it before it really started coming on strong. Different mufflers helped a lot too. The engine is smooth and totally reliable. I have flown it for about 60 flights on this plane and it has never missed a beat nor needed readjusting,even from summer to winter. Everyone at the field is impressed with the power and smoothness. It's a great combination. Go for it!

Sorry, but for the price, the GT80 is a D O G
Basic comparo
GT80=5.8hp, 7.69lbs, 24x8-10 - 22x8-10 propellers, $800
ZDZ80=8.5hp, 4.1lbs, 24 x 10-12, 26 x 10-12, 28 x 8 props, $715 w/muffler
DA100=9.8hp, 5.8lbs, 26x12, 27x10, 28x10 props, $1150 w/o mufflers
Anyway, like I said, I have flown the extra and sukhoi with this engine, if your into aerobatics, dont buy it. It is a great sunday flyer motor, it is NOT a performance engine. It is Heavy. Its almost twice the weight and half the power then.

I can see that no one elses opinion is worth anything in this thread. Anything you say will get blasted if it doesn't glorify DA. DAs are excellent engines,but get a grip. They are NOT the only engine out there.

The main reason the used 3W-100 motors cost less is because they weigh one pound more than the DA. In the never ending quest for "lighter, stronger, more powerful, newer", people avoid the old technology even though it works perfectly well. I see a heck of a lot more 3W-100 motors than DA motors flying planes at my club - because they're available, priced right, and they work.
Perhaps some day, I'll buy a used DA - when they are considered obsolete because they weigh one pound more than the BME and don't make as much power...etc....

Diablo, its the other way around over here. There are only a couple 3W's, and all the rest are DA's. And the majority have switche from 3W because of all the problems with the engines and service.. Just stating what I see. Nobody is blasting anyone Russ. Check out the classifieds, 3W's do not hold resale, DA's go for as much new when they are used!
