I have an older BME44 that has given me great service until recently. It started to sputter sometimes and I though I had old gas or the weather had changed ect then today it would not run after flying about 8 flights. I topped off the battery then tried again. Got it home and got the cowl off the looked around. The pickup sensor looked like it was cocked in about a centimeter, it was not loose but just moved over. I loosened it then put it even with the crankcase like it used to be, and tried to restart it. After quite a few flips it started and I began re-tuning the high and low. Something strange, when I jab the throttle up it sometimes pops or stumbles with the low needle pretty darn lean. Do I need to do anything? Any help would be great. I owe a lot to this engine and plane combo, it has performed excellent and I have learned some much having a stable platform.

Is there any physical damage to the Hall Effect sensor? Did it rub on something when it moved? Rumor has it these sensors will act as described when in a failure mode. The sensors are inexpensive, you might consider replacing it...
Is there a gap between the sensor and the timing ring or magnet? The gap should be about the thickness of matchbook on business card.

Thanks for you reply Michael. No damage that I can see and it did not come in contact with anything. I will check the gap. I might have a chance to go to the field tomorrow and fire it up. I do remember reading somewhere about sensors failing. It ran quite good yesterday after I re-centered the sensor and tightened it down. Also used some loctite on the threads. Where would I get a new sensor? RCI?

Make sure that the sensor is over the magnet.
I had problems a couple of years ago and purchased a sensor just to find out that my adjustment was wrong.

Oh man! That is a cheap part here in the land of the big buck toys! I will check again tomorrow that the sensor is right over the magnet and if I still have problems I will order a replacement. I'll let you know how it goes.

It sure did Geistware, that little staudacher is a rocket again. I almost wanted to put the 20-10 on just to really rip it up. Weird how something that small had so much to do with a real headache. Thanks for your help!)
