I think we all probably need to know a little more about the engine before anyone can give an opinion.

There were a few older engines that were run either glow, gas, or alcohol, but only a few. Knowing more would help a lot.

If you want a glow engine, buy one.
If you want a gas engine, buy one.

Trying to convert either of them into the other, won't do much good.

Gas engines were designed from the start to run at its best on gas and vice versa for glow engines.

Zenoah had a G23 that came either way and it ran fine both ways. It obviously has an adapter in the spark plug hole. It will run fine as a Glow engine but may benefit from a larger carb as a glow engine. I have run my OPS 30 glow engine both ways and used a ZAMA carb from a Ryobi 31 when running it on gas, probably the same engine you're describing. W8YE on here can suggest a bigger carb if it does not already have one.

I would say going from gas to glow is easier, less expensive and worthwhile than the other way around. Even then, do it only if you are the tinker type and don't mind spending a whole lot of time figuring things out with potentially so-so results.

I converted several weedie engines to glow. You really only need to get a glow plug adaptor to make it work. I got mine from CH Ignitions. I talked about my Ryobi 31cc glow conversion a while back somewhere in RCU. Ran it on "4stroke" glow fuel (i.e. 15% nitro 17% oil) and it puts the OS 1.60FX to shame for less than 1/2 the cost. It also ran just fine on 5% oil and no nitro, though power was not quite as good as with a little nitro. Weedies are by nature built with low CR to withstand the abuse of clueless home owners and year-old bad stale gas. You need some nitro to wake it up a bit.

You will get better answers by posting this kind of questions in the Conversion forum.

You will use about 4 times more glow fuel than you will gas. You will develope a little more power, and be able to have a lighter engine than with a gas unit, but for the size engine you are talking about, unless you buy it for about $10.00 or less I wouldn't bother. A bigger Tartan I would pay more for, but not some tiny 31cc conversion.

If by "nitro" you mean glow fuel, then the answer is: it depends on what glow fuel you use - just like all glow engines. 15% will be consumed faster than 0% nitro, simply because nitromethane has a lower stochiometric ratio than methanol, so you'll burn more fuel per combustion cycle with more nitro in the mix.

I don't think the Ryobi guzzles more glow fuel than the typical 1.5 to 2.0 glow engine. Stay with 5% nitro and 10% oil (Super-T fuel) and you can easily get 15min of flying out of a 16 Oz. tank. I would go with a 20 or 24 Oz. tank though.

I'd say don't get the engine if you just want to save a buck. If you don't have any experience with tweaking a Walbro carb, you'll be lost. If it doesn't come with a Walbro WT-499, which is the one that Zenoah uses with the G-23 glow, ask the guy what he did with the carb to make it glow compatible.

Conversion engines can be a lot of fun to play with, but if half of what I said above is greek to you , get a regular glow motor instead.

I have several engines which were gas and converted to glow. This was the big thing a few years ago and you will get more RPM when converted. My best is a FPE 3.2 this is installed in an EXTRA 260. It uses plunty of glow fuel but performs like a top. Uses 5% nitro or no nitro at all. Higher nitro will make it overheat. I converted my 3W back to gas because on glow fuel it would run fine until you slowed the engine down to idle and when you raise the rpm again it was now running backwards. Engine did not make a sound when it reversed and went right up to 7500RPM. Kind of hard to land a 1/4 scale ship in reverse....
