Do I run-in a gas engine like a glow engine? Can I just run about 32 oz thru it , then go fly and run it in in the air? I live in a development so the obvious question is now do you guys keep a gas engine running for a whole gallon of fuel without your neighbours complaining Tks

Sportflyer,
Does anyone run even 12 ozs. of gas through a weed wacker before using it? Our gassers are ready to go, out of the box (mine have been anyway). I mount them on the subject bird, start it and run it up enough to confirm fair mixture adjustment, and confirm it is likely to remain running, then go flying. Sure, I am watchful of the running and my flight pattern for a while, but I know no better way to break these puppies in.
Good luck,
Bedford

Do not run your engine in on the ground, its a good way to burn it up.
The best way to run in a gasser in in the air.
Perform a basic ground check and set the needles for a good smooth run, erring on the rich side, then go fly.
Keep an eye on cylinder temps and exhaust color (black=too rich hot=too lean)
If the engine is brand new, you will need to run 3-5 gallons of high grade petroleum 2-stroke oil like BelRay S2 or Lawnboy Ashless.. after break in switch over to high grade synthetic like Klotz, BelRay H1R or Amsoil.

Thanks. When I read about 1 hr of run in , I thought it was bench run in and not running in whilst flying, my misunderstanding . Perhaps I should fly the first few tankfuls without the cowl ?

As a rule, I run all my engines from the beginning with the mixture, oil ratio, prop, and rpm the same as I will be running them a year or two from now. They still all run as well or better than they did out of the box.
Gassers don't have trapered cylinders and/or rough machine work as most of the glow engine do. Nor are so many of the metals used as mis-matched, forcing extra care during the first few tanks of gas.
Mount it, set the mixture needles, forget about it, and go fly!

Silversurfer... for the most part I agree with you but 3W and DA won't warrantee your engine if for some rare reason there is a problem during break in and they find out you've used anything but what they recommend for break in.
I find the engines loosen up faster with the petrol oil first, but then again.. it could all be in my mind!
In principle though.. I'm with ya!
