I just got this engine on a trade, came with an Ohio RC 28% Extra. It has very low run time, it has CH Ignition. I have limited experience with GAS, I have Two G-26's and one DA-50R. I was wondering if this is a very good engine, worth keeping on the plane, etc. Also if there are any tips with this engine I should know. I did a search with not very much luck with this Motor, just to watch the timing, etc.
I have the original paperwork for the engine, and the oil mix they say to use is 30:1 with one extra ounce of Oil to the gallon for 4 tanks, then switch to the correct ratio that will best suit the type of operating condition. I plan on flying it very scale, and I am not into 3D type flying. I run Amsoil 80:1 or 100:1 Saber in my other engines after the break in, and was wondering if this will be ok in this engine. Walker just said to use a "good quality" oil. The owner said he did not run/fly this set up much, should I run some 32/30:1 non-synthetic for a few gallons first? I know nothing about this engine. Thanks for the help!

A Walker is a first class engine. After break-in it should turn a 22x10 in the 6800+ range, it might like a 21x10.
Break in with a good dino oil, 4 gallons... just like the instructuions say, and then go the same mix as your other engines.

I have flown the plane/engine this last few days, it really is a nice engine. It fired right up after being stored for several years. Nice slow idle, has not quit once, in about 8 flights. Plenty of power for this 87 inch Extra, even at 4,000 feet. I am happy with this engine. I have tried a 20x10 prop, and now have a 22x8, but have not flown it. I will give the 21/22x10 a try next. I am running lawnboy 32:1, then will switch to my Synthetic after 4 gallons. I am breaking in a G-26 also, so they can drink the same mix. So no one else has any input/experience with this engine?
Thanks for the input tkg, how is flying down there in Wyoming? Norm here, about 25 mph steady, 30 gusts, love to fly in the wind!!!

Many years ago I had a Walker 3.2 that I purchased directly from Walker when they were in business. TKG was right on target when he said it was a first class engine, very well made. It was extremely powerful for its size and weight, and it ran like gang-busters. It was then that I learned that most single cylinder gas engines are real shakers, and that this wasn't my cup of tea, so I sold it, saved my $ and bought a gas twin. If flown on sturdy, well constructed, solid airframes, the engine will probably last forever. I have never heard a complaint about Walker engines.

Cajuncharley,
Thanks for your reply. This walker was bought direct as well, the guy i got it from actually went to Walker on a trip and picked it up. I guess he really liked them, so he bought one for this plane. I am happy with it, very good starting, and nice throttle trans, most of all plenty of power! I am not an engine guy, is there any place out there, that can repair or work on this engine, if needed? It sure does shake & bang that airframe around.... LOL
Twins.........Here I come!!!!!!!!!!

I would recomend Ralph Cunningham at

His website is:

He is without doubt one of the most knowledgable and straight forward engine experts in the business. Dealing with him is a pleasure. Since you have C & H Ignition, you probably should deal with C & H if you have ignition problems.
Good luck,

Hi Bigskyrc: I have the same engine from Walker that I obtained from a good friend who bought it new direct. I had the throttle coupled advance and was a pretty bad shaker, enough to move the ring around with the hall effect. I decided to lock the ring down and add the electronic advance from C&H to the ignition package. This combo has not stopped the shaking but has reduced it significantly enough that I rate it as a non-issue. I am currently running the engine in a Byron Christen Eagle and it is a dynamite combo. It was living on a Giant Stinger and with a 20x8/14 would pull it verticale out of sight. I use Poulan synthetic oil mixed 40:1 and have had no overheating, idle, transition, etc issues.
Love the engine, you got a good one.

Wireman, Thanks for the reply. I really like this engine, after being stored for many years, it came to life with a few flips of the prop with the choke on. I have flow it on the Extra about 10 times now, and it is a good combo, never had a dead stick, very good on power. I am very happy with the engine, but it is a shaker, as you said about yours.(Nature of the beast) I guess. I will look into the CH with Electronic Advance, if that helped it out. When This engine is at idle on the ground, the tips of the wings, and ailerons are a blur from the shakes! LOL But a very nice engine over-all. Thanks for all the help.
Happy Flying!

Mark, that Homelite 45cc I converted for my CAP is a shaker as well. I found a video on how to balance the hub of a prop. It was the first time I had ever heard about balancing the tips, then the hub. I'm going to do that on my replacement prop and see if it makes any difference. At full throttle, that Homey shook the aileron counterbalances off. They are lead, and I got them to finally stick by drilling small holes in the ends, and using polyurethane glue.
As far as parts or work for that engine, if you want to try and stay local, Ray Moritz's repair shop may be able to help. Might be worth a call to him. Ray's number is 278-3978. Good luck, my friend.

Thanks Randy,
I love the engine, really a nice engine, and pulls that big Extra with ease, but shakes pretty good. Makes we want a twin!
Let me know how the hub balance goes, and if it helps. This engine seems to be smooth at high throttle , but really a shaker at low. LOL Thanks for the number, I'll have to give him a call and BS for a bit on this engine. I don't need anything for it now, as it runs so sweet, but "KNOCK ON WOOD" when I crash, I might need some help............
Heading out the door now to go fly. Hope your out the door there today, it's nice today here in Good Ol' Montana, Overcast, but very nice. Thanks again Randy.
