Default Run it dry??

Is it a bad idea to run a gas engine after draining the fuel tank to clear out the lines? I realize that it will be running out of fuel (oil) for a second or two. Comments???

Won't really hurt anything but it is more trouble than it is worth unless you are thinking storage for 6 months or more.

I considered doing it to reduce gasoline fumes in the van and the garage.

I've been doing it for several years with my gasser. I haul it around in a Pontiac Vibe (small station wagon) and yes it does make a difference. I don't mind the extra flips to start it the first flight of the day, it's worth it to me.

I use AVGAS because of the inconsistent reformulated pump gas and because it has very little smell. (It does not smell like yard work.[>:]) I only run it dry if I know I won't use it for more than a month.

I run them dry also.
Only because I do not want the left overs to dribble out onto a cars insides and smell or stain.

Same here I didnt run it out of my brand new motor on saturday and smelled my focus up good. I ran it out today and it was much better, I also plugged the vent line and closed the choke.

I like to run it dry.

I've been told that there is alcohol in most of our "oxygenated" gas. Very common here in Colorado, expecially in the winter months.

I've been told that it will make the rubber diaphrams inside the carb turn brittle over time.

I do it because I'm cheap and don't want to buy carb kits any more often than I need too. They cost $13.[X(]

A Question,, why do engine manufactures reccomend 87 octane vs. 93 or AVGAS etc,,, I know you can control the burn of higher octane gas because it is a slower burn etcetc,, but it looks like AVGAS or higher 93 octane would keep the motor cleaner,,, I.E. Desert Aircraft reccomend 87 octane????????

It takes higher compression to burn high octane fuel efficiently. Our engines are relatively low compression, so burning high octane fuel just results in carbon build up and fouled plugs.

Mill the head down a few thousandths or replace that 1/16" thick cylinder gasket with one thats as thin as tissue paper, and then you might get away with running high octane and actually realize some benefit from it.

I run a Zenoah 26 in my FG RC-car, and alsayw run it dry before storage. I know that the Zenoahs have their compression ad ignition set for 95 octane, som that is what I use. I, furthermore run on alkylakgas, an environmentaly friendly gasoline that smell susbstanitally less when storing the car. It also runs cleaner with less residue on the spark plug.

The diaphragms will get stiff either way...We run methanol in our race twin...Put in new diaphragms in June before the first race....We make no effort to run the carbs dry..Next race is August, last race is October...Diaphragms last until the next year...Don't need the whole kit, just the diaphragm kit, about $4.....[8D]

...and I who thought "run it dry" only apply when Captain Kirk ordered it to enginering and only when attacked by the Klingons...

RCIGN1 does Walbro make it so that all their carbs use the same diaphragms?

All Walbro diaphragms are the same material, none made for methanol....
Different castings use different diaphragm shapes, like WB, WJ, SDC, etc...

Another pro for avgas is its shelf life......it will not get skunky nearly as fast as car gas.
The downside is the price and the hassle of running out to the airport for a few gallons unless you've got a full size out there. As a sideline, a buddy and I delivered a kitfox to a buyer in S. Carolina from Wa. state. This was in Oct. 05. We paid as much as $4.80 per gallon for 100LL. I'll stick with crummy old car gas for my toys.......................
