Default Poulan 46CC

I am going to convert a Poulan 46cc chainsaw into RC use. My question.... is it worth the extra money for a 295 Pro version? The only difference I know between the 2750 and the 295 Pro is that the later has a chromed cylinder versus Nikasil. Is there any power difference? I assume the chromed pro will last longer... but how many hours should I expect to get out of the Nikasil versus the chrome(I assume airplane use is an easier life than cutting wood)? Thanks for any insight.

You will never wear out either one in an airplane..The Nikasil is theoretically smoother, but not much difference in rpm or life...Look for 7000+ rpm with a 20-10 MA black prop, 6500 or so with a 22-8 Menz wood prop...They work well.....

Just curious, what do you have to do to the 46cc to convert it and where do you get the parts (prop hub etc)

I don't know if things have changed but Ralph used to do the conversion complete for about a $100 bucks plus ignition and a Bennett muffler for a G38 or G45 will bolt right up to it with no modifications. Plus he will test run it for you

If you don't weigh the mount and muffler, like some companies we won't list here, a Poulan converted to CD ignition weighs about 3 lbs..Turns a 20-10 MA 7000 rpm, a 22-8 Menz about 6400, at 7000 feet.....

Got my poulan 46. Haven't taken the saw apart yet, but what is everyone doing with the shaft on the rear of the motor? Do you cut it flush with the crankcase? Can anyone post a picture of the sensor mount on the CH kit?

carefull when cutting on crank shafts you need to do it slowly or the heat will melt the rear seal.

Milton, that's light. Did you have to make your own prop adaptor? Is the sensor mount standard or custom? What is the cost of the Falkon?

I'm gonna be starting on my second Poulan 46cc conversion pretty soon here. I was wonder how much of the cooling fins I can shave off. I am guessing I can save maybe a couple of Oz. all together. Is it worth the excercise? Thanks.

Volfy: Can you do a experiment for me? Run your engine(46) with a fixed ignition to see how it works with fixed ignition? Thanks Capt,n

captin, there's your answer.

I don't have the Poulan set up for magneto. I had it on electronic ignition (CH auto advance) from the getgo, so I don't know if there's a way I can set it up to disable the auto advance.

You do know that you can get just the Synchrospark module from CH, right? It comes in a small separate module that you plug in line between the hall effect sensor and the ignition module. Supposedly you can retrofit this onto most fixed-timing electronic ignition systems to turn it into a auto advance system. I've bought one of these for my Ryobi 31cc fixed-timing system before and it works as advertised.

I know the stock 46cc poulan runs good with flywheel-mag. Now after removing the flywheel there is no flyweel -effect to smooth down the idle. Is this engine with fixed ignition and no flywheel going to idle good and no kickback on start-up. How many degress BTDC is stock- flywheel timing? Capt,n

The only thing custom is the mount for the sensor, The Falkon ignition were bought about 4 months ago for about $80.00 but they have gone up to about $110.00. the flywheel and prop hub were made on a lath. I might use C-H on the next one I do if I can find out why the Fox I have has the timing set at about 4 deg ATD and not 28 deg.
