Yes Tony, it is very easy to start by hand. With the ignition off (grounded) choke the engine until it is wet at the carb. To do this, once the gas gets to the carb flip it about 2 times with your thumb over the carb intake.
Set the prop so that it comes up on compression, while facing the engine, at about 11:00. Carb at idle, ignition on. Prop the engine with a downward swing (slap). Your hand should naturally come out of the prop arc as you swing through. It is a good idea to use a glove at least until you are comfortable starting it.

No you don't need a spring starter for the G38. Mine starts fine be hand. I choke it with the throttle fully open and ignition on. Once it pops close the throttle and open the choke, then slap it again and it should start within 2-3 flips. With the magneto engines you need to flip the prop at around 600-700rpm I believe, to get a good spark. That is why you need to slap the prop through compression. It is easy once you get the hang of it. Oh and use a thick leather glove for safety.

You certainly do not need a spring starter for the G38 and besides the extra weight of the unit, the one way bearing tends to break down after little use.
