I have a 1/3 scale supercub with a dry weight of about 34 pounds with the engine. The engine is a 52 quadra with electronic ingition. my question is what size prop should I use for realistic scale flight. Thank you

My 2 pennies for this discussion, a long time ago, I asked Bennett Built to recommend a prop for my Quadra 52, and without hesitation, he said 18-8x14. I have been useing that prop for 15 yrs. and would not use anything else, and I have tried every thing else.
Bigger is always better.

With all do respect. Southgate Aero Inc was a recognized full service dealer and repair facility when Quadra was alive and well.
And I think you are not using the Q52 to its full capabilities with the prop you mention. Although I don't have any idea what type of flying you do. But again a 20X10 would be a good choice. FWIW

Thanks guys for the info. what would the difference be between a composite prop and a wooden prop for this engine?. In other words would be better forme in your opinion.?

Well here we go again, in my experience, it makes no difference in type of prop on the Q-52, it will not begin to turn any prop with the authority, of the other 3.2 engines out there, BME, FOX, Precision, etc. It is just not a very powerful engine. What it is is a very owner friendly, reliable power plant for fun type flyers. I have owned 2 of them, one I still have, that I switched to C-H Ignition, didn't help in the power department, just made it easy to start with out the spring. This engine has a ton of hours on it, and it runs very well, but a 20X10 is not a prop it likes. The airframe that it has been in for the last 10 yrs is an R&R Snapper, it weighs 18 lbs, and will fly in any weather you can think of. It's not very aerobatic, but does what it does without scaring the hell out of you.
BTW, for Don, with the Q-42, one of my friends has one and it will turn any prop you put on it faster than either of the Q-52's I've had. And for the record, I am hardly an expert when it comes to 2 stroke gas engines, but there is very little that I don't know about them.

Bipe2, a composite prop in most cases will get you some more R's
GreaTOne_65, I don't profess to be an expert either, even after repairing crash Quadra's of all the sizes Klaus and his crew made from the 35 to the 200. But if that engine won't turn a 20x10 I think you might invest in a set of rings.and check your timing, Oh yeah you might even consider going to a min.of 50:1 mix.
And FWIW there is a 65lb twin still flying after 16 years with 2 Q50's swinging 20x10's

Thanks T-one, and it is obvious I got lazy with my reply. I have been one of the first ones around to run 50:1 mix in all my 2 stroke engines, leaf blower, chain saws, airplane engines. One of the engines, was a Q-50 converted to the 52, the other was a 52 from the get-go. I have the converted one, and I'm here to tell you the 20x10 on my Snapper is really funny, put the 18x8-14 back on and the difference is startling. Straight and level to verticle, takes no imagination about which prop performs, as far as I'm conserned Dick Bennett knew what he was talking about.
I thought I'd seen about all the twins flying in MI. Who's are you talking about?

Evidently you have missed at least one.
It has been featured on dvd at the D.O.G.S 2005 fly-in at Dayton..Also had a write up in AMA Model Aviation magazine, last year, maybe Oct,Nov, around there.
The guy that flys it is also the builder. It is a scale model of the Wing Derringer from out west around the 60's.It is a scratch built model and believe it or not does 4 point rolls, loops and once in awile a rolling circle. Not bad for a 16 year old plane @ 65 lbs.
The owner resides in Wyandotte Michigan.
Watch for it, I understand he will be hitting the major giant scale flyins this year.
And yes I know Dick Bennet very well also.
Since I am the twin pit crew member maber will get to meet somewhere.
see ya

Hey there, T-one, now that you mention it, I do know that airplane. The one fly-in I always try to make has not had him attend. If it is the same plane I'm thinking of I know the pilot, he and I got acquainted in AZ. about 15yrs. ago.
I hope we can! Did you ever see Bob Bailey fly his DC-3 before it died?

If it was at the C.A.R.D.S show last year yes I saw it die.
By the way I made a mistake in the weight. It is not 65# but 76.6lbs. even better on a pair of now 17 year old Q-50s awinging 20X10.
He will fly it at the Joe Nall this year .

I have been flying my 1/3 Sopwith Pup for 16 years on an old Quadra 50 that was used when I put it in. I use a 24-6 Zinger to get out past that big cowling plus I want low speed lugging ability, which is what I would imagine he would want for that Super Cub to look realistic. Smaller diameter props are more for speed than slow, realistic flight.

Hello all!
I have a Q50 tucked into my Miles reed Extra 260 with fiberglass 20in prop (heavy and flat and no pitch markings) The plane goes vertical, but has no speed. I need speed to fly patern aerobatics and the big bird currently flies like a slow stick. I was wondering if anyone has an 80in extra or equiv e/ a 50 on her. If so...... What prop do you recomend? A 20-10 or 22-8 or smaller. The engine is used and I was told it was a 50, but others said it was a Q52. How do I tell?
Thanks ahead of time for your help!
