Default PCM with gas?? Is it advised or needed

I've been told to use a pcm reciever when ever I install a gasser in a plane to stop interference from ignition,,is this true or recommended ,,I want to know before throwing my first gasser in the air,,I know I can ground check it thoroughly BUT???

Not true, PCM and PPM are both FM and although PCM is a little less susceptible to interference it is not a requirement.

Default I use PCM with mine, but....

I use PCM in my gas-engine-powered planes, but do so knowing that PCM often masks noise problems that should be cured. I do a thorough engine-off noise check followed by an engine on noise check. during the checks, I check not only where I lose control and where I regain it, but where fail-safe takes effect, etc.

The way I like to look at it is that noise will be present with either system if present at all, but the PCM receiver is more likely not to react to the presence of the noise. However, it is my understanding that a PCM receiver will ignore the data packets associated with the noise....and if you are giving commands to the plane during that time, the plane will not react to your commands.

Do a good noise check with either system (PPM por PPM), and cure any problems you find, and you will have confidence in the plane...

Much has been said about this subject in the radio forum. You may wish to do a search and read a bit about this.

I use PPM with my gassers. No problem.

PCM and PPM both will get interference. The difference is how each will react to it.

PPM will act like the plane is being hit.
PCM will go to a fail safe mode. If you are not asking for a control input at the time you may or may not realize your having a problem.
You are able to set the failsafe mode to whatever you want but most people I know use the default setting of throttle to idle and controls neutral.

I watched two planes this year go into the ground during a PCM lockout. (failsafe) so to say that its less likely to be interfered with doesnt hold water with me.

Both are good systems. You need to decide whats the best for you.

FM recievers work just as well as anything else the key to the whole thing is to keep reciever switches and wires atleast 8 inches away from anything to do with the ignition wires, switch, battery etc.We have been flying warbirds this way for years and with the reciever antenna inside our birds with no problems at all,Have been doing the same with aerobatic planes too.Pcm does a fine job also,Heli guys use them with EVERYTHING balled up together in an area no larger than the size of a softball with no problems,If room is an issue use a pcm,if not go with the FM it will work fine>
