Best Gas Engine? A Nitro Guy Needs Help
#1
I've been flying RC planes since 1974 but have never owned a gas engine. I picked up a Yellow Aircraft P-47 and assumed I'd put a Moki 2.10 in it. I think it's time for a change. What's the best gas engine on the market for a plane this size? I'm not as concerned about price as I am a good scale-like power ratio. I read one thread where several people used a G-45 and described it as fast, a G-62 would be a rocket. I'm confortable with what I've read about chosing a G-38 but is this the best engine?
Thanks.
Thanks.

As far as Zenoahs are concerned, there is a reason they have been around for a long time. I have 2 that have been converted by Ralph Cunningham to electronic ignition and both as solid, strong and very reliable
If you are really considering the g38 have it delivered right to Ralph and have him convert it. He guarantees his work for the life of the engine. You can contact him right here on RCU. Just send a private message (PM) to RCIGN1
Heck, contact him first. He may even have one already done

G38s have some great attributes, performance is not one of them. They are very available, cheap, reliable, long lasting, and easy to start. The only negative is that they make Supertigre 3000 power and weigh five pounds. If price is a major concern, Quadra 42s can be found cheaper and have similar performance.

yes, the G38 is a bit heavy and low on power compared by today standard's,
I say a bit low on power because of prop/RPM comparisons with other newer designed 35cc and 40cc motors,,,
I have a MVVS 35cc gasser and the G38,, my MVVS will turn a Zinger 20x8 at 7500 (tuned for flight) (7690 peaked out) a G38 wont pull that,,,
but being a Zenoah I'm sure its a very well made motor !! so is the MVVS..

Thanks for your responses. You may find it strange for someone to be so lost that's been in the hobby for 32 years.
Money is no object. I'd like to buy the best engine available that's reliable, fit's in the cowl with no holes, and won't launch it into orbit. If you have a G38, what would you rather have instead?

there are also,,
Roto 35cc
ZDZ 40cc,,
3W make's a 42cc (I believe)
Brison makes a 40cc, but I'm upset with them,,
some of these motor have their carb's in back, that is 1 reason why I bought the MVVS, the other reason is I waited over 3 months for my Brison,,
I love my MVVS 35, although almost as heavy as some 40cc,, my PA Gee Bee Y (ARF) weighs over 15 pounds and my MVVS 35cc pull's it nicely with a 3W 20x8, it would pull a heavier 17, 18 pound plane but it would have to be propped with a larger diameter prop with less pitch like a 21x6, 22x6, 22x5 (??)..
don't use a Zinger unless you use more pitch, I found Zingers flex a lot..

The Yellow Aircraft P-47 is an 80" span plane and the weight range is 19-26 lbs. I'll put a lot of detail in it so it'll come in on the heavy side of the range.

A friend of mine has this model. It does come in pretty heavy for that size plane. He originally had a Quadra 42 on it and the performance was marginal. He replaced it with a G62 and it seems to be a lot better choice for this plane.

Look no further....the G62 Zenoah is the best for the money. You will never wear it out and it has plenty of power. Capt,n
