Default Hangar 9 Extra 260 Engine Selection

I can't decide which engine to put on my Hangar 9 Extra 260.
Tell me what you guys are running or what you'd recommend on this aircraft to do aerobatics and some mild 3D

Thanks.....Dave

You want between a 40 and a 46.

I have seen one fly on a 26 and umm well it flies! Loops are barely doable. Do not waste a 50cc on this plane.. it's light and will fly better with a lighter smaller engine.

Hope this helps.

I went through the same process and decided to go with the Brillelli 46 w/ Elec Ig for a Hang 9 , 260 extra. Scott @brillelli says I'll have the engine by next week so will hopefully post some more info on performance by thanksgivings. Stay tuned.

Well you made a good choice and will have tons of power for sure.

THe weight difference is only a few oz. and a lot more power

Dave

Have a look at the Evolution or MVVS 45 Magnezium, I have one of the new MVVS one's with the automatic choke, it outperforms all of the other Petrol engines at my club up too and including the 50cc one's and its lighter. This is while I am still running it in on a Oil mix of 30:1.

I was trying to find a good engine match for this plane also. At first I wanted the DA 50 but now I dont know. If I dont get the DA then I was looking at the brillile (SP?) or the evolution. What do you think will be better?

Well it flies... I flew one for a club member... really lacks vertical... but if you just want a fun day at the field it's fine.

Personally a DA 50 is overkill on this plane.

I would be looking at the Brillelli 46 as that would be more than enough power. Evolution is good too... but they are costly and require a pipe to come alive. If you got one without doing a pipe thats just a waste of money IMHO.

Brillelli also has a 50 that is as strong as a DA but $495 with muffler.. so almost 200 cheaper. However I would probably stick with teh 46 at $375 it will have more than enough power and save you money.

I fly this model with a ZDZ40 rear exhaust with a cannister. Flies great, is excellent for 3D and IMAC. It not ballistic on vertical pulling out from a hover but does have plenty of power.

I just put this plane together as my 1st giant scale. I am running a DA-50 and love it! Tons of reliable power, and if you get into trouble practicing 3d it will yank you right out.. I was in your same shoes not too long ago about the engine selection for this plane. DA-50 is too much for this plane, don't waste your money on a 50cc ect... I figured eventually I'm going to step up to a larger 30% airframe and need a 50cc and thats why I went with the DA. The H9 260 flies great with this setup for me, and I could not believe how slow the plane comes in for landing. With a little breeze you could almost keep up with it at a fast walking pace. Anyway thats what I went with and am very pleased.

I have a Saito 220 and a DA 50 I'm going to try, if it flies good with the Saito, I will stick with it to keep the weight down and put the DA on a 30%

yes, I'm flying it with a Saito 1.80 and it has plenty of power. I'm spinning an APC 17X6 prop, however I'm having a little trouble slowing it down on final. Any suggestions?

I am actually getting into giant scale airplanes. This extra would be my first one. DA 50 plus muffler=. Just way to expensive. So, i'm thinking of buying a DLE 55 with a DA 50 pitts muffler.

The only question is how do you mount the engine so that the thrust lines match up and it matches up with the cowling. Where would i find the thrust lines on the engine? I know basically you find the thrust line on the engine and then match it up to the thrust lines on the firewall, but on a Gasoline engine, i have no idea where to find them.

Also, how is the reliability of the DLE engines. I heard that they were DA copies. Would it be enough power to hover with plenty of reserve with the weight of a smoke system?

A fellow has a video posted on You Tube of this model being powered by a Saito FG-36. An excellent match.
