Default Idling problems for 2 stroke gasser

Hi all, Assembling my new qq 102 w/evolution 116 & wanted to hear the engine & break it in. Bad part was the evolution exhaust i got for it would not even come close to fitting in the cannister box. I might be able to get a 60-65mm can in there, the evos were huge, maybe 80-90mm. So i just ran the engiine for a few minutes with no pipes at all. well it wont idle for crap, it seems like its running too rich, cause breaks into a 4 stroke. try leaning, no help, try richening no help. did get it somewhat better by adding fuel over the factory setting. Am I doing wrong running open exhaust & is that causing the crappy idle?

every two stroke seems rich (misses beats) when idling. It is a fact of life and the 116 is no exception to that rule.
This happens up to 1/3 rd trottle. With proper carb tuning it can be eliminated from that point on, but the engine needs to be run in first.

No exhaust system-lets the incoming fuel charge flow out the exhaust with the burnt gasses.
and as noted - low speed performance is ruined
with the cans th engine idles at down to 800 easily
here is a pic of a Paint Spat CAP I did for a friend using th factory cans- I had to slit ,bend and rebraze one header to align them as req'd

Thanks Dick, you did good getting that system in there at all. I would have had to completely rework the plane to get those huge cannisters in there. They are so damn big! I've got a set of 60mm ones coming from DA with a set of MWS headers that DA has. Do you think the engine will idle down to 800 like you said once I get these on there? It really doesn't sound good at all. Once you slow down below a third throttle, It is very hard to keep the engine running. How smooth was yours when you got down with it? Thanks.

Don't aim for lowest rpm yet. The engine needs to run in until smooth. That takes a couple of gallons.
At 1/3rd throttle, open the idle needle until rpm markedly drops. That should be a good start to work your way down.
Remember, to run without exhaust system, the settings you need may be very different from a full rigged setup.
