Default Help Rcign!

Hello Rcign,
I see you are the gasser guru, got a quick question. I just received a new G62, and need to tap it for smoke. This one has a spot on the rear of crankcase, that is nice and flat, and has a small indentation there already. Looks like a great place for a smoke tap. Am I off track here? Also, can I just pop that half the crankcase off to do the work? Hoping The needles are caged so they don't end up all over the place.
Thanks,
Jim

Default It works!

Well, I just had to take her apart and try. The case is about .375" thick at that point, with a nice flat entry and exit for the hole. Make sure ya don't have the nipple extending into the case, but with that thickness it shouldn't be a problem. Looks to me like they planned a tap there when they designed it!

Looks like they came out with a new muffler as well as the boss in the case..The supplied flat mount will need a hole for the tap with a matching hole in the firewall..The usual place for the tap was about 1/2 inch from the crankcase joint, to the rear, and centered in the casting just below the cylinder joint on the muffler side.....The cylinder spigot extends down into this area so the case was relieved inside with a ball cutter from the tap around to the larger part of the case.....Looks like you got it right......The tap in the old location would be too close to the new muffler.....

Thanks Rcign, trust me, the drilling and tapping is the easy part, that mounting plate is well hardened!
