Default 3W75 quit in flight (Maybe ignition)

I have a 3W75i engine in my H9 330L. This engine has been the most reliable r/c engine I have ever owned. I have run 75+ gallons through it with no trouble. While I was flying today the engine quit. I could hear it start to lose power. I throttled back to bring it in to check it over. About 3 seconds later it quit. After I got it back in the pits I could not even get a pop out of it. I checked the voltage on the ignition battery and it was fine. I pulled the plug and placed it in the cap and spun the prop briskly with no evidence of a spark. I checked the spark plug out with my weed wacker and it sparked just fine. I suspect that the ignition or the pickup is dead. This is the old 3W ignition (1 magnet). Is there any way to check to see if maybe the pickup has failed (no pulse to ignition box)? If I do need a new ignition is there alternative replacement than the 3W($199 from Cactus)? CH maybe?

Thanks,

Sean

c & h has a cheaper conversion that i have talked with them about for under 100.00 out of china and they support and warrenty it for u. I have not used it yet; however when any of mime gasses go out falcon or 3w this is the route i plan to take.

Cheaper still is the same CH after market ignition sold by RC Ignitions. About $25.00 less than CH.

I happen to have a new pickup for that motor and also a used Ignition that was a spare for my old 3W 75. Both units are the old style like you mentioned. If your Interested let me know. I'll make you a good deal on them.

I took a quick look here this morning and saw someone who was offering to sell an extra ignition module that they had. I just came back to PM him about it and noticed it wasn't here anymore. Is this still available?

Thanks,
Sean

Just a follow up. I bought the CH ignition for my 3W. I must say that I am very pleased with it. I have run several gallons through my 3W since putting on the CH ignition and have not had one problem. This was definitely a better way to go than to spend the extra $100 for a 3W ignition.

Hi,

Is this engine a rear carb version of the 3w-75? If so, was it spitting any excess fuel out the carb? The symptoms and age of the engine (runtime) would suggest a failure of the reed valve. The rear carb version has a reed valve. I believe that the side carb is also reed valve rather than piston induction, but I don't know for sure since I have never had one apart.

Hope this helps

Elson
