Has anyone fiddled around with ign. timing on spe 26 yet?i adjusted mine advancewise as far as slot would allow and saw a definate improvement of about 250/300 rpms and better idle and quicker response. This leads me to believe they are very mildly timed from factory. No evidence of preignition was heard.I'm thinking of taking retainer screws out of pickup unit and securing it temporarily with a wiretie so i can adjust while runnig WOT, then take it until preig. is heard and back it off a little .The slots could then be colored in with a pen or marker and holes redrilled.I don't know how this will affect the easy hand starting as i always start mine with a starter. Please don't just reply by a Zenoia or something as this forum is here to improve the products we do buy. Thanks

Yeah I fiddled with the timing on my SPE 26, and like you I found that keeping it as far advanced as the slots will allow was best. So I left it there. I would also be interested in what other have found.

Rambo,
I have a 26 from BCMA. I researched the BCMA thread before I flew it, and Adam's recommendation for the 26 is to advance it to the ends of the slots, exactly as you have done. Mine was set there when I received it. It will be interesting to see if there is more useful RPM to be had. Adam lists 8200 rpm on a JXF (Xoar) 16x8 as his benchmark, and a max usable rpm of 9400. I've gotten 7500 from a 17x6 APC so far, but I have less than a gallon through it. From others I gather that break in improvements will be noticeable in several areas (speed, power, and ease of starting).
I have also been using an electric starter. I found that a regular Hobbico hi torque starter (about $18) and a small gel cell 12V battery works great for the little SPE 26. I'm not comfortable hand propping it because of the high friction of my engine and low momentum of the relatively small prop.
Regards,
Mike

Well you know the saying if some is good more is even better.I was able to slot my pickup slightly adding maybe a couple of more degrees Now running at 7500 w/16x10 apc this means another 100/200 rpms.Keep in mind this is free power with no parts or expense.I hear no evidence of preignition and throttle responce is excellent.Incidently i'm still hand propping it.If anyone goes any further such as redrilling mounting holes etc. please post results.I'm pretty much satisfied right now so i doubt i'll go any further, as is it pulls my 12+ pound plane verticle very well and comes very close to hovering it, and this on a 90 deg+ day.
