i have the version 3 hh 100t and i have ran it on the bench for about half a gallon of gas. i have the low end set at 1/2 turn out and the top end is 1/2 out also. the midrange sounds good as does the lowend but i can't get the topend to clean out. it just burbles and sounds as if it wants to clean up but can't quite get there.
i am running a 26a vess prop and it is turning 5800 rpm's. i actually closed the topend all the way while it was running at full throttle and it had no effect at all still way rich. there is lots of residue coming from the pipes and it actually drips out after the engine has shut off. it's a bear to start also like it's getting way to much gas. any idea's anyone????

Steve, My guess would be a defective carb, If you close the hi speed needle valve and it continues to run, it has to be defective. Ed

The low end needle no longer has any effect on the carb after about 3/4 throttle. Closing the high end needle doesn't always shut the engine down if it's still drawing fuel throught the idle port. If it's hard to start, the low end is too lean. It would be best to return to the original factory settings, and start over. If you are using a mineral oil (Lawn Boy ashless as an example) you will have a black residue coming out of the exhaust. Once the engine is broken in and leaned out, it should be significantly reduced. Just my thoughts. I've been wrong before.......

there is gobs of gas dripping from the carb while trying to start it. the transition is good also it doesn't bog when being revved up.

Try checking the metering needle and diaphragm. A carb should never drip, that is a sign that the metering needle is not seating as it should and that can lead to a rich condition.

Either RTK or Dan, have mentioned the most likely problem.
