Out of curiosity, what are the needle settings you guys are using. I know, altitude dependant, but stock setting are making it extremely tough for me to start it. I hurt after an afternoon of flippin' the prop!

Is the engine firing at all?

RE: Area 51 engines
I gave up on it the first day, went back at it two days after my arm stopped hurting. I did go through a tank after another struggle, I had switched to a 6v pack for the ignition. I thought there was something up with the 4.8v pack I had in on day one. After a stop for refueling, back to flippin to no avail. Next day same thing, one tank but fought to get it started. Residue is black, so it is rich. I do know we had a temp drop, but I should have been able to restart it. I have had other issues drawing my attention this week to the 7950 servos twitchin on the elevator in my Pilot Sbach which have been resolved. Now to focus on getting the motor to fire in a couple of flips dependably. I wanted to know what guys needles were at, just for reference.

RE: Area 51 engines
I only had the starting problem the first time and got it started after priming the carb with a shot of fuel and then giving it a go. If I haven't flown the plane in a few days, I prime it first time and that's it. That saves my shoulder for my conversion motors which usually need more elbow grease.
And Milton got a hold of me. It's all good. Just getting the job done right.

RE: Area 51 engines
Hey guys, I have a strange problem.
I got my Area 51 running but it will not idle down under 3000 RPM.
I have checked and verified that the throttle plate is closed all the way and when I close the choke it dies.
Anybody have any ideas where to look next?
Thanks in advance

Mine just gave up the ghost. Had a gallon and a half just about through it. I went for a flight tonight to continue the break in and I got about 6-7 flips of the prop to get fuel to the carb before a major grindage issue! It almost siezed it was so hard to turn. I don't want to investigate any further than I already have into the crank issue. I'll send it back but I'm sure I am hooped because they'll find some other reason to void the warranty, ala Sony products.
My last flight was yesterday and all seamed hunky dorey, even idle sounded good. I was all stoke'd to go fly tonight...but.

RE: Area 51 engines
I don't know where you got it from but send it back to them immediately for sure, I am guessing it has a faulty crank bearing.
I have dealt with JC engines for a while now and one thing is for sure - the factory (Kevin) DOES honor warranty items when the dealers notify him of them. In fact, unlike some of the other manufacturers from that same part of the world, he is very up front with such things and I have certainly never had a problem with him supplying parts to me for warranty claims when I have notified him of anything. Even when the issue with one particular batch of the older cranks reared its ugly head to us.
The idle speed issue seems weird for sure -posibly an air leak.
The "JC-CM6" plugs are from the same chinese supplier that supplies "cm6's" to many of the chinese engines - they just print the engine manufacturers name on them for a small fee or a large order. The first thing I do with them when I get a batch of engines in is to toss those plugs and replace them with genuine CM6's before the engines go to the customers.

RE: Area 51 engines
Yep
There is a couple of reasons Milton was immediatley correct
1 - He is THE MAN when it comes to the Area 51 engines - NOBODY knows them better than he does.
2 - You have the old style crank there - we have seen this failure before on a particular batch of those cranks. The new ones have a slot in the big end of the rod - to allow better lubrication of the bearing and better main bearings on the cranks also.

RE: Area 51 engines
I don't think the bearing has failed, that crank journal looks mighty close to the rear casing ,I bet the crank journal has come loose from the crank webbing.
I have seen this happen before on that style of crankshaft.
It still means a new crank though.

RE: Area 51 engines
Well looks like I get my money back from Paragon. Ray didn't seem to understand the issue, "its the reed valve, Why repair, It failed? It is a brand new engine, no need to repair." He was adiment on returning my money. Ohhh Kayyy. I wanted it repaired, but oh well...
Now I am bailing on the brand. DLE 55 is on its way thanks to my understanding LHS, Lester's Hobbies. I'll have the Sbach in the air next week-end. I liked the A-51, don't get me wrong (gas noob learning curve was steep!) but if the only support I have for it is via Paragon, sorry...I gotta go elsewhere. Thank-you Milton, but Kevin already sent a crank set to Ray for this particular motor, and he doesn't want to repair it. If he is unaware of the issue, do I want him to repair it? If he is playing dumb, do I want to be a returning customer? I think we all know the answer to both.
Maintain flying speed ,
J
Edit: Almost brand new JTech pitts wrap around muffler for sale, polished...PM me if interested

RE: Area 51 engines
The Area 51 are great running engines but the first ones did have a crank bearing problem.
I have not had one returned that was updated to the new crank in the last three years and still have parts to repair them with.
Did go through a time that it was hard to get parts but for the last 2 1/2 years the manufacture has sent me anything I needed for repairs and I still have parts here to fix them.
The manufacture and I came to agreement that we knew they had a bad crank and they should be repaired no matter if in warranty, how many owners they had or where they were bought.
Most of the engines that failed had to have the crank, piston, rings and cylinder replace and I know this had to be a heavy cost to the manufacture, they have sent me all the parts and covered the shipping cost to me.
I have only had one returned in about the last year and I think that most of them have been repaired, So if you have one that has not been repaired all it will cost you is the to and from shipping cost.
The parts are running low and I think getting them in the future might be a problem because the Area 51 engine is no longer in production.
Just posting this so if there is one out there needing repair you need to contact me at [email protected] while the parts are still available to repair them.
Thanks
Milton
