I made a KING KONG starter from an aftermarket geared down starter intended for a Pontiac..Made a 4" aluminum cone for a 3" Miller rubber sleeve..Put a flat plate across the front with 2 handles...A momentary on kill switch from a chainsaw..12 volt battery on a small 2 wheel cart..Welding cables from the battery to the built in solenoid on the starter...Turns my 289cc Herbrandson race twin 3000 rpm....Insdtant starts all weekend at the races....
Overkill ? Ask the other racers whose wimpy starters won't start their race engines...

Jackumac,
Sorry no photo of the starter, never thought anyone would want to see it. I would bet the accord and civic starters have very little differences between them. I used an old set of jumper cables for the leads. Will try to get a photo taken and post as soon as I can. Work seems to be interupting sport and play time a little too much lately. Ron

I have to ask, because I can't recall more than one or two people I have run into, that use a starter for the big ones. Everyone that I fly with or regularly run into at meets hand start our engines. Is hand starting a minority - is it a regional thing - what? Just curious.

Any engine with an electronic ignition will hand start, it's just easier to use a big starter...EXCEPT in the case of something really big, or big engines with magneto ignition...It an be done, but is not recommended....I have the scars to prove it....

I have hand propped a Mooney with a 180 HP Lycoming when the starter drive failed, had to have a guy hold the key to start to operate the buzzzer that gives the spark at low speed as opposed to an impulse coupling. Was happy when we fixed the starter.

I use a big starter on big engine for two reasons. 1. to me it's easier. 2. I like having all ten fingers, hands and wrists in pain free working condition. I have in the past hand proped them but since I built the starter it is just too easy to hookup the battery and zip it's running. Ron
