I broke my DA 50 in using a Zinger 22x8 and now have been using the NX 22x8 for the last 2 years. The engine spools up quick and has great vertical on my WH Edge..... Bill

I have a Vess 22B that I bought from DA along with the engine. They offer a full selection of props for there engines and can give you a little info about different props they run and test on engines.

For 3D type flying Vess 23-A

There are as many opinions as there are props

What kind of aircraft are you planning to fly and how will you be flying it? If it's a P-51, then perhaps a 21x12 or 22x10 wood prop once broken in, and slightly less pitch initially. In high pitch speed stuff, the much maligned Zingers are actually supposed to be quite decent. And available anywhere.

If your need is for an 3D/IMAC aerobat, the Mezjlik 23x8 carbon prop (I know, they cost $$) is an excellent all around choice, excellent for IMAC precision as well as very good for 3D. It's my favorite. I gotta agree with Milton that the Vess 23A is a really good choice for 3D, as it is purpose built for that. Menz 22x8 or nearly identical NX/JXF props are also very good all around props.

Mejzlik - DA, Troybuiltmodels, Chief Aircraft, are some resellers.
Vess - East RC sells, plus some of those guys above.

Best bang for the buck is Xoar laminate props. I simply cannot find anything made of wood that beats the performance.

JXF, TBM and some other cheaper brands are too soft for me. Menz S and MSC props are interesting but take getting used to.

Breaking in using a 22x8 is your best bet. You can change to the right size after 4 gallons (22x10 or 23x8).

XOAR and NX (and several other private brand props) are manufactured by the same Chinese company, JXF. They are virtually the identical profile as the MenzS, and in my testing provided approximately the same performance in the size ranges that I have run.

MSC is a great 3D prop, with excellent downline braking. Do not exceed the 22x8 size in MSC on a DA50, as they are a much wider blade and present a much higher load than others.

I am not getting the same results with NX and JXF as I am getting with the Xoar laminate props.

The NX is made of relatively good wood (does not compress), while the JXF seems to be very soft to the limit of being not usable.

be the same company, but it does not run the same on the DA-50s.

The Xoar Sword prop. looks different than any prop I have seen.

I measure the difference in rpm and engine temp, as well as static thrust and spool up speed.

The Menz S I have looks very different in shape than any of the above.

I agree, the NX laminates are stiffer and seem to perform differently. The layers and glue make them harder to compress. In my opinion, people see to overtighten their props. Once the center gets compressed, and the wood fibers break, it goes downhill from there. The laminated prop seems to compress very little, and carbon props not at all.

The following is just purely for those interested. I enjoy this stuff and am not trying to make any point here that one is better, worse, etc. Here's some comparison photos of some of the props hanging on my shop wall to look at and compare:

18 inch props - APC, Mejzlik, Vess, Xoar, MSC
Notice how different the tips are from each other. Notice the difference in width. The 18x8 MSC is also a much thicker prop than any of the others. Since it's a top view, you can't tell.

Mixture of 19 and 20 inch props - MSC 20, Mejzlik 20, MSC 20, MenzS 20, Xoar 20 laminated, Evolution 19, APC 19

Notice how the MenzS has a smooth sweep at the tip, and the Xoar and Evolution (JXF factory) have a little flat at the tip. The MSC is much broader in the middle, the APC and Mejzlik have narrower tips.

22 and 23 inch props - JXF 23, NX 23, MenzS 22, MSC 22
In this size, the flat at the tip of the identical JXF and NX is less pronounced, looking very similar to the MenzS. The MSC is very thick, and simply wider from root to tip than the others.

23 NX offset on top of the 22 MenzS
- notice the trailing edges are identical in profile

23 NX offset on top of the 22 MenzS
- notice the leading edges are not exactly the same, but quite close

22 MenzS laying directly on top of the 23 NX

- awfully similar.

The biggest differences between the NX and MenzS might slight differences in the airfoil profile as well as the wood quality and stiffness.

I am running a TBM 23x8 classic beechwood prop on one of my DA50s. I break my 50s in on 22x10 TBM props. They are very economical before you switch to a more expensive wood or Carbon fiber prop. The TBM props are a little soft and a little louder than some of the other wooden props but they come fairly well balanced and have done a great job for me!!

Good luck...
