My CRRC 50 engine is difficult to start, it will fire and run but then stop after a few seconds and will also kick back very hard when trying to flip the prop over. Could this be the ignition timing being out. Also what NGK spark plug should i use and would i be better with the RCExl ignition unit i have seen mentioned on here.

No experience with 50, but we have found several units of CRRC 26 with the same problem and all of them had the ignition sensor too advanced. Try moving the sensor a bit ccw.
