What is this big engine??

I bought out a collection and came across this monster in a box. Can anyone identify it? I will probably Ebay it but was just curious if anybody knew what it may be. It does turn over and seems to have decent compression. Thank you in advance....

Thanks RC. I figured she was an old rig. Maybe I should just mount it on the garage wall for a conversation piece! I thought it might be fun to try and get it running but then again....

RC day is right it is a Quadra 35 but don't under-estimate this little engine. Check it out and make sure it has'nt been crashed as the crank tends bend/break easy. Then if it's been sitting around a while you may want to put a carb kit in it. Fire it up with an 18x6 or 18x8 and you should get 6800 - 7800 rpm . I've got one in my qtr scale cub with an 18x8 running 7600rpm. Good little engine for this size model as far as I'm concerned. Let me know if you fire it up. Just my thoughts on this.

It could also be a 40. Seeing that you have the steel prop hub, it's an older version. Remove the muffler and look into the exhaust port and count the rings. 1 ring=35cc, 2rings=40cc. My 40cc turns a Zinger 18X6-10 @ 7400rpm. Not bad for an old engine. For about $15 you can also add the points eliminator kit that will help reduce rfi. These are great running little engines and will last a long time. B&B Specialties has all the parts you could want for these engines.

Thank you for the responses. Prop? How do you determine size? I would say it is at least 12" across.
I grew up with gliders and this batch I purchased is all powered stuff so it is all "greek" to me!!
Also, what kind of fuel does it burn? I am thinking about giving it a spin?

Hi,
This engine is a gasser and burns regular gas mixed with oil. Pick up a can of 2 cycle oil at your home store and mix up some gas with about a 35 to 1 ratio.
Since it has been sitting around for a long time, the carb diaphrams are probably bad. Go to your local 2 cycle engine repair shop (take the engine with you) and they should be able to fix you up with a carb rebuild kit for less than $10. replace both diaphrams and it should be good to go.
BTW, you probably will NOT be able to hand start this engine. The magneto system generally needs to be spun faster than you can spin it by hand to generate a spark.
Electric starter, spring starter, CH electronic jump start, or a REALLY vigorous flip are what it takes to bring one to life.

Take the prop off. The size may be stamped or written on the prop. the 18 is the diameter of the prop in inches. I'd get someone in your club that knows gas motors to help you. Could be dangerous otherwise.

Thanks bdtsr , I alwasy thought just the 35 had the rear exhaust. also just FYI i run mine on about 30:1 with a synthetic oil available at motocycle shops. It's called "Opti-2 smokeles ego"
this way you don't get the smoke as in regular 2-stroke oil. I can also start mine with a quick flip of the prop. Once they're set up you should be able to do this too. Just be carefull and always wear a heavy work glove. Safety first! Good luck.

When I was in my thirties, I used to hand start Quadra Q-35 engines with points. Never tried one without points. Even with points, it took a lot of energy and you had to accelerate the prop through ninety degrees before compression, or it wouldn't generate enough spark.
There is no way that I could hand start one today. I'm with the other fellow, use a spring starter or electric starter, unless you're young.
They are good and trusty engines.

I'm in my forties! Maybe I just have a less tempermental engine? You watch, next time I go out I won't be able to hand start it now. jinx! LOL
