Default BME 110/116

Looking at a used BME 110 and BME 116. I know the seller through a friend. By all accounts the engines are solid and have been taken care of.

The seller told me that BME added cooling fins to the 116 but that is about all that I know about them.

Anyone care to chime in on the pros and cons of each?

Any advice is greatly appreaciated!

Have been flying a ZDZ 80 that I liked. Switching airframes and thought that now might be a good time to switch to a 100cc engine as well.

Had the ZDZ on a H9 Cap. Thinking about one of the BMEs for a new Cap or Extra.

Thanks,

Race21

I'm flying a 110 and have for several seasons. I have to say that I'm happy with it. Some have had issues with BME engines, but the only problem I've had was with the Falkon ignition system. The 110 now has an RC Excel system installed that I got from the new BME folks and it's running well. I also have a ZDZ 100 that is running very well, so I would say make your choices and take care of those engines.

The 110 and 116 have the same cylinders, so cooling fins are the same. I would go with the 116, an all around stronger engine.

The current version of the 116 is not the same as the original, which is why it weighs a little more.

The early 116's had induction issues which have been 100% corrected for those that acquired the modified reed block from the maufacturer. No issues there anymore. BME no longer uses Falkon ignitions so that issues is also long gone.

The 116 is the lightest 100cc class engine, with more power than the nearest engine in size or power, which is the 3w 106. The 106 weighs almost a full 2 pounds more than the 116. So the old 116's are lighter than the new, with reliability up there with any of the biggies and power that beats them.

T.O.M

I have a BME 115 in a Wild Hare 102" Sukhoi with a custom carb block fix from Patrick in Pa and it runs perfect in any postion. The engine pulls the plane like a big Foamy.
But what issues do the Falkon ignitions have. Do you think I shoud change the ingition to an other brand in if so what would you suggest.

Thanks Mike

I would run the Falcon until it dies, there was a batch or two that were bad, no way of telling if ya got a bad one or not.
If it dies buy an RCEXEL or CH ignition, you will have to re-time it because they are different than falcon
The only difference between the 115 and 116 is the carb read block, which is a little heavier unless you have the latest version which is not aluminum. The 115 has always been 116cc+ engine from the start.

If you change away from the Falkon you will also need to change the pin outs on the Falkon hall sensor. They are not the same as CH and RC Exl.

I would get rid of the falkon ignition and not take a chance on losing an airplane. The timing must also be changed when going to Rcexl ignition. The falkon ignition is very erratic running and you will notice a smoother engine when it is changed.

Lose a plane because an ignition quits?? More people need to fly gliders for awhile and learn how to manage energy. Not all flying is based on hovering.
