Default SPE26CC Sputtering

Hi Guys, after the G20 lemon saga...I went out and got myself an SPE26CC

On Ground it all spins well and no dead sticks during flight..

My question is, does anyone experience the engine sputtering during flight? It sputters at Hi Rev on ground And no matter what i do i can't get it t stop. Worst still it sputters during flight.

Its not a nonn stop sputter but intermittent type...

Any ideas?

The sputtering is the crappy Melody ignition module. Get an RcExel ignition, time it at 28 degrees, and all that missing will go away. Engine will run great.

Sounds like you went from a Honda to a Lada.

If you have an RcExel ignition on the engine already just check the timing and adjust it to 28 degrees. Check your plug gap also, should be .020-.024". If that doesn't take care of it try a new spark plug. Here is the RcXel instruction manual that will show you how to set or check your timing.

How old is your engine? If the rubber inside the spark plug boot is black, it is an old ignition system that gives lots of trouble. I had one which ran fine on the ground but when flying would cut out intermitently. Steve Chiao at Cermark replaced it with a new unit (gray material inside plug boot) free of charge. Have several flights with new ignition, no problems, engine (SPE 26) running great. Plenty of power for my purpose, 18-6 prop at 6,600 rpm. I have it mounted on a Great Planes Super Stearman. He claims the new ignition system has solved the problems they were having with the old one.

One of the signs of the timing being to far advanced is a persistent HS miss. Almost like its to rich, but you can not tune it out. As you lean the carb the engine just quits.
On the SPE we have seen this often correct timing should be 28-30 Degrees BTDC.

I too have seen this many times on SPE engines and is why I suggested checking the timing. If you have the Melody igniton module with the black boot inside the cap, throw it away, it's junk. If you have the newer version Melody ignition with the gray boot inside the cap, use it at your own risk, I would throw it away also and install an RcExel. Which ever one you use, acurately check and set your timing, it is one of the most common problems with SPE engines and will cause exactly what you are describing.

Mine did that on 4.8v pack. Read the instructions and changed over to 6v, it's a happy camper now!
