Idle speed

Thanks Scott and Mpascual for your comments. Only a few tanks thru it so good to know that it I can expect
improvement with more run time. Really appeciate the quick response. Off to the flying field for more time on this lil beauty .

On a Gee Bee Y 120 , with an estimated flyng weight of 15 lbs. Do you think the DL 30 would be a good fit?

Thanks
I thought the "Y" 120 was like In "YS 1.20" engine Now if one said , On a Gee Bee Model Y with a YS 1.20 2 cycle or a YS 4 cycle...we may know more exactly what you have. Now that it folks....

Hi All

I got my Dl30 3 weeks ago and fitted on a seagull 120 yak for testing with 19x8 wood prop, my first gas engine and i like it. like most of you nitro can
be a pain and so I think the way things are going with gas engines the smaller ones are puting out good power to size way to go.
the plane takes off in no time and straight up fantastic and no dead sticks love it. I have put 3litres so more time yet before I get good idle speed.
next week it will go on my new sebart Katana 120 a very nice and well build plane and very lite so it will 3d like mad cant wait. I will post some pics when
finish, the plane looks great. its good to read all the positive post here and I can say I,am very happy with this engine and will get another for a diffrent project.

have fun

Anyone have a comparison of the DL30 and a OS 200P or the Saito 220?

The DLE 30 is cheaper to buy and run.

I am planning on using Stihl Ultra HP at 32:1 for Break-in and then 40:1. The only thing that concerns me is that I have read in a few different forums not using mineral oil for the first 1-2 gallons will prolong the break-in time. This is my first gas engine so I really don't have any experience on break-in time.

Does anyone have experience not using mineral for break-in? Would the break-in be faster using Penz or Stihl mineral for 1-2 gallons.

Thanks

* I posed this question in the Two Stroke Oil Detectives thread also for the non DLE30 pilots.

That's one question that will be debated until we're all dead. My conclusion is that it simply doesn't matter. Either way is great. Myth busters would be very busy in this forum.

JoeAirPort, is it really noticeable the difference between the stock spark plug and the NGK?

I've seen many threads where the stock plug caused a lot of trouble that was resolved with the NGK CM-6. So I have never used the stock DL plugs. I always say that $3 is cheap insurance to keep the engine running well.

I don't agree with last sentence. In many cases, with engine troubles, the spark plug change solves the problem , no matter if new plug is the stock plug or NGK plug.
I've seen A LOT of DL engines with stock spark plug with hundreds of flights and no problem at all. Maybe a little wear of the central electrode, but if you re-adjust the gap and clean the plug it works again as supposed. We are talking about a spark plug, no much science inside . Maybe the trick is to measure the gap and set correctly.
I've seen others 'like CM6' spark plugs from others manufacturers (not DL or RCEXL), and the central electrode is burned or damaged at first litters of running time.
There are many 'clones' to NGK CM-6 plug , and not all have the gap correctly adjusted to 0,4 - 0,6 mm.
The CM6 from NGK is a standard spark plug. No platinum, or rare metal inside ....

It's my opinion.

I've never had a bad NGK plug. Been using them for a long time. But hey it's your plane. Do as you wish. I wish you lived closer so I could mail my stock DL plugs to you.

A CM6 with a RC EXL ignition will run perfectly well with a 1mm (.40) gap..There is no reason to gap a plug so close...Don't believe it ?
You can cut the side electrode clean off a CM6 and the RC EXL ignition will run the engine just fine...Might start hard when cold, but no difference at all when the engine is hot...

Also , i never had a bad RCEXL CM6 type bad plug. I know most people having troubles with DL spark plug also have troubles with entire engine, because are newcomers to gas engines, most of them comes from glow engines and glow plug is first thing they change whe engine does not run well. They do the same with spark plug, but also they have troubles when break-in engine, at low rpm and hi ratio oil content. Then engine can run poorly and they change the plug (and usually set the needles) for example to a new NGK and the result is : NGK are better glow plugs. If you install first a NGK spark plug and give the engine to a beginner gas user , maybe will have same troubles as with DL stock. Carbo deposits, and poor idle..... Then you must clean the spark plug.

Spend your money as you wish.
Joe : i can pay the shipping cost if you send me all your DL spark plug stock I'm in honour [8D] Many of my club memebers will be happy with (almost) free spark plugs...
Also i know the gap setting to 0,4 - 0,6 is a little close. But on some engines helps to avoid middle rpm hesitation.

I have been around ic engines all my life. I am not going to spruke off about what i have dealt with as this is an open forum.
Firstly i have only had 1 NGK plug ever fail from new in my whole life.
Secondly I can not tell you how many times i have been asked why a motor stops running, on DL engines, and the primary cause was the stock plug.
Maybe the NGK is more tolerant to a poorly tuned motor

Maybe, but i don't think so.

Today i've tested a DL 50 engine with a Champion Y82 spark plug. User has changed all the way the needles setting. The problem is that this spark plug does not run well on this engine. But Campion brand is well know and makes very good spark plugs. All i can say is that DL stock spark plug can perform the same at NGK CM6 if gap is checked an set the same. Also there are some spark plugs like NGK CM6 that performs the same (i.e. RCEXL ones).
I play with RC engines more than 30 years.
Now i'm the tech service for Saito, JBA, ENYA, CRRC, DL/DLE and RCEXL brands in my country.
Every one has their own experiences. I talk about mine .

So, if a stock DL and a NGK was laying on the table and you was told that one of them was going to fail in your next flight while hovering, which one would you put your money on and install in your plane?
For me it the NGK. I have had to many plugs give me trouble in my life in anything from lawnmowers to outboards but none of them was a NGK. In outboards the trouble plug for me has always been Champion.

I will gladly give the $2 for the NGK CM6 over the stock plug even though I have not had trouble with the stock plug.

Is this thread about plugs or the DL30? Come on guys lets here more about the engines.

Jody,
Do you have the dimensions on the engine in a PDF or Cad file. I' going to be building a big profile and will be mounting one of the Dl 30's on the nose and that info would help me out a lot.

I'll put them here again for convenience along with a mounting template courtesy of our friends from DL Down Under, they are also in the very first post when I started the thread. Here you go!
