Default G-38 starting problem

I have a G-38 and it is very difficult to hand start. Once the engine is running, it is first class. Spent two hours today and it finally started.

You can choke it and it will try to fire with the choke closed, but fire is about all it will do.

Anu ideas would be appreciated.

Default G-38 starting problems

On my last post I should have said that when the choke in on, it will pop, with the choke off and at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle it will fire but not run. Well it will run but takes far to long. I have been in the hobby for a long time, but this engine should start easier.

Default G-38 starting problem

I have a G-38 that will not hand start. if i put my starter on it, it will fire right up. I think it is impossible to spin the magneto fast enough to create a spark by hand. CH ignition makes a jump start system for the G-38 so you can hand start them.

Spring starter from > http://www.bennettbuilt.com/

Stop knocking yourself out !

Also, check the gap between the flywheel and the magneto.
I should be about the thickness of a dollar bill.

Default G-38 starting problem

I have had 4 G-38's in the last 15 years, and have flown them from -20 to 85 deg. and have only had them balk when the plug was fouled. Normal starting is choke it, 3-4 flips and it fires, choke off 2 more flips and she's running. I put compression at about 12:00 but start the prop swing from ~3:00, this gives it a little more speed as it comes around to fire. After you flip your for awhile, is the plug wet ???? sounds to me like it is not getting fuel.
