Default G-62 issues

Man I cannot believe the issues I am currently having with my G-62.
Had it running yesterday, once it poped it was good to go.
Ran it today and the same thing.
Then I ran up the engine, killed the throttle and it died. I tried to restart it but no way would it run at all. My right arm is about to fall off due to all the starting.
The carb is getting fuel on both sides, just nothing getting to the cylinder. I pulled the 2 panels off, blew them out and gave it another try. Still no joy. I am not to sure if it is the pump diaphram or not.
I put some fuel on the plug, inserted it, and she starts fine with 2 flips.
The issue is getting fuel into the cylinder, I think it may be a pump issue due to no fuel build up after priming at the choke but not to sure. It did have fuel build up but that does not seem to be happening, as it did yesterday.
Any help would be appreciated.

Canuck:
I have to assume since you did not specify the engine is mounted on the airplane? If so and before, it ran fine here is what I would look for,

1. If installed on the plane. Make sure the clunk is still attached to the pickup tube. They have a tendacy to fall off. Use a zip tie to secure the tube to the clunk.

2. If not installed on the airplane and you can visibly see the fuel line ensure it is not floating on top of the tank and re-read #1.

3. If your plumbing is good to go, you will more than likely have to take the carb apart and perform a cleaning of the screens. If memory serves there will be 5 screens. 3 you can see and two you cannot. If the engine has sat up for awhile it is possible that there may be some oil mix clogging the screens. I will tell you in advance that you can buy a rebuild kit for the Walboro carb at your local lawn mower repair shop, however if you are careful you will not need one unless the diaphragm is cracked.

When you disassemble the carb make sure you put the reed valves back on the same way they came off. It is very easy to get them 180 degrees out and they only like to work in one direction.

Use brake cleaner and spray the orifices if possible spray them in the reverse of the way the fuel enters the carb. Do a thourough visual inspection and re-assemble. Pay particular attention to rips or tears in the reeds and the diaphragm,

Hope this helps you somewhat.

Good luck.

G62 Walbro carb 101 Been looking at Walbro HDA 48 G62 carbs for 23 years, only one cleanable screen in there, about 3/8 diameter, under the diahphragm with one screw in the center...
The reeds you speak of are neoprene or fiberglass material..there are two gaskets...The gasket with the hole in the center goes against the carb body on the side with the steel cover held on with 4 screws...a diaphragm with a metal center goes on top of that, the cover holds it all together...There's a lever under the diaphragm that lifts the inlet needle to admit fuei...The end of the lever should be flush with the casting next to it..Not higher, not lower, flush..
One the other side, with the screen, the diaphragm with the flappers goes against the carb body, the gasket on top, then the cover with the single screw...
If the carb won't pull fuel when choked there is a leak somewhere...Look at the gaskets under the carb block...2 Gaskets, one under the block, one under the carb..Any leak there if bad enough will leak engough so that the choke won't work...
A 62 carb in good shape will pull fuel at least 2 inches with each choke flip and will pump and run the engine at least 4 feet straight up...
Last but not least is the infamous Horizon brown phenolic carb rotator block,,They crack and leak..They were replaced by the hard black plastic block,, Better, but the pulse passage on the top surface is sometimes too close the edge of the main venturi hole so the pulse leaks out there..Misalignment of the gasket is a sure leak..Some hot stuff on the edges of the passageway keeps the gasket in place..Go easy...
Disregard any posts about hooking the diaphragm stud to a slot in the lever, it doesn't exist in the HDA series...

Thanks for the input guys........much appreciated.
Fuel cell and lines were good. Still not drawing fuel. Pulled the carb apart, blew out all the ports, and installed a carb kit. Still no fuel draw.
I decided t put the carb from my Corsair on, to see if it worked. Well it did not.
I then installed the carb back on the Corsair............no issues, ran like a charm.
I think its something else, however I have no idea what it could be.
Next step will be to switch out the engines, and see how things go.

The other day we went through this and found that the engine crankcase had a smoke pump nipple in the crankcase. The carb never pumped until the nipple was plugged.

The point is, that there may be a crankcase leak somewhere?

W8ye

Thats a good point. I will have a close look as it was running previously. Now it doesn't so it has an issue somewhere.
Thanks for posting.

Old thread, but I have to know ... did you ever figure it out? I had a similar problem on a Taurus 52 ... it was the clunk falling off the tank. I assume you closed and reset your needles to factory settings and the like?
