RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Ok, so you got me to thinking. The first set of pics is the first DLE-20 I have been flying on the Ultra Stick, and it has 38 flights plus a couple of ground runs. You can see the piston and ring in the first and the back of the cylinder wall on the back side. The first 20 or so were on Mobil 87 with 32:1 Briggs and Stratton oil, but Mobil 93 with the Sthil HP Ultra therafter. The second set are from the NIB DLE-20 I got at the same time and have never been run it, but will next week or so on the Velox.
and these are from the brand new ones

The reason for the 93 is that is what DA wants, and I don't use separate gas for all the gassers I have.

The manual for a DA-50r states;
"Low to Mid octane pump gas is recommended. High octane may be beneficial only
when using tuned exhaust systems."
If it's not knocking, no need to waste the extra money on premium.

I'm guilty of running higher octane, but for only two reasons. Honestly, I think that the extra $0.20 a gallon it's worth it to go with higher octane. Why do I care? Octane degrades over time, and I go for spurts. Over the summer, I'll burn two gallons a week in my only gasser. Then, I'll burn 6 gallons over the entire fall/winter/spring (if I'm lucky), and I'm never quite sure which two gallons (I have a 2Gal jug) will have to sit over the winter. When I'm burning through it I go cheaper, but just because I'm sure it'll only last the weekend.
Honestly though, extra octane won't hurt....and it's only $0.20 a gallon. It's not like $6 a gallon difference.

Nope it is not chipped, it is carbon. I have the advantage of seeing the pics in full resolution. What is really disconcerting is the new engine's ring when you blow it up. It looks laminated and has alot of tooling marks. It really makes it clear what actually has to break in. It is far from round.
And yes, here is the manual for the DA-60 I just got.

BTW, the Nordlocks on the muffler screws worked great! When I removed the muffler to take these pics, they were tight and did the characteristic "tink"sound when they let go, indicating they had full preload.

Flew my AW ProX260 today and with the DLE 20cc engine had mega power at 5800 ft. Used about 2/3 tank in a 9 min. flight spinning a 16 X 8 prop. I used the AW template and it was very tail heavy to my supprise, so I move the engine foward 1/2" and still had to had several oz. of lead to the nose, this is at 5" cg. ????? my Pro X260 with the OS 75 balanced with a few oz weight. I thought that it was going to be nose heavy with that gas engine up front. Also the stock muffler read 103 dBs at 5 ft. Jim

When I get a DLE20 in a few months....if the piston ring does not look good it will be replaced with a Frank Bowman custom ring. His ring seals better & breaks in much faster. Capt,n

There's also discussion over there about precisely how to center your ailerons properly, which affects the perceived tail heavy issues.
Plus, a spinner of 3-4 ounces is what AW used on their 'kits'.

Since the focus of this thread is on the DLE20cc gas engine, you'd not know about such CG issues here. AeroWorks has their own support section here on RCU, and that's where there's several msg threads on that model over there.

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
I am getting the Velox close to mounting the DLE-20. I really like the flexibility of this airframe to accept a number of powerplants. For the DLE-20, 3DHS recommends using a single elevator servo and a pull-pull on the rudder. For a DLE-30, which is about 10oz more weight, you can rear mount the rudder servo and use 2 elevator servos. I am using Hitec 5665 and 5685 HV servos so the 7.4V Lipo will be how the CG will be adjusted, since it has about a foot of fore-aft mounting capability. I am going for the minimum possible weight so I will move the Rx and fuel tank around so that the CG can be adjusted with the battery. I am not even going to use any kind of choke actuator, no servo, no linkages, nothing. The cowling is cut to allow me to just reach in and flip the choke lever, just like on my Ultra Stick which has an exposed DLE-20.

If you go to your LHS, do you ask the train experts there, to help with your model plane issues? No.
There's only two of us in this gas eng thread with his same setup, but a whole bunch over in the AeroWorks support section. Where's he going to get the most from his needs and questions on that model?
I posted links directly to where he'll get the most help. What have you done to help him?

My tail heavy issue was not during flight, it was when I was doing the static balance before flight. After I moved the DLE 20cc gas engine forward and added weight to the nose, then stactic balance was right on. The plane flew great with the DLE 20 cc engine. A 3 or4 oz spinner would not have been enought. Jim

Quick note for those with a DLE20 on back order from Tower. I was told originally to expect shipment mid January. Apparently they're early? They said they'd charge my card when they shipped the engine. Just got notification regarding the charge a minute ago... FWIW

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Getting close hope to start break in in the morning. As you can see had to trim the motor mount to clear the muffler. For anyone going to do one of these the 1 1/4" circle is prefect radius for the fillers I made for the new motor mount holes on the inside of the firewall. I did reglue the firewall on the inside with thin CA and it sucked it in and went around everything with a small bead of titebond. The back of the box I made for the firewall I did cut out to run hoses though. Made a new tank mount that bolts in to move the tank back closer to the CG. Hope this helps if anyone is doing a H9 Hellcat. So far it looks like it fits good.

Your H9 Hellcat setup looks very clean. What size prop will you be able to use on the Hellcat? I would be interested in the final weight, it probably won't be much more than a glow. Jim

Hey guys,
I need a header for this one and I already have a pipe. What options do I have?
Does anyone know which MACS current header would be a direct fit?
Thanks
