RE: DL-50 engine
The DL50 is a gas sipper. I run a 16 oz tank and fly 15 minutes and still have a third of a tank left in reserve.

RE: DL-50 engine
This is my first gasser and I have a question. The stand offs are just to long. I am wondering if I should just make some out of 1" dowls and use blind nuts on the firewall or buy the correct lenght I need like the ones that came with it.
Thanks, Dan |
RE: DL-50 engine
Lowes has 5/8" oak dowels and also metal about 3/4" washers I would put one on each side of the firewall and use self locking nuts and blue thread locker. I have tried blind nuts and they work loose and or use blind nuts and self locking nuts also. You need the support of the large washers because of the pressure tighten on wood compresses it. Just my opinion.

RE: DL-50 engine
Wood stand off no way you can take the existing stand off that you have to a local machine shop and they can mill them to the lenth that you need or you can order some from PSPmfg.com they have them at any lenth you may need,

Thanks, Dan Dan, the 5/8ths wood dowls will work just fine. I prefer square stock though just because you can box 2 or 3 sides with 1/8 inch ply and make it really strong. Like Fooped said, use washers to spread the load. Cheap easy and fast. |
RE: DL-50 engine
I'M SORRY GUYS I DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT THE STAND OFF MOUNT SUPPORTS BEING TO
LONG (DAN4466) DO YOU HAVE THE CLEARANCE FOR THE CARB IF THE STAND OFF LEGS ARE SHORTNED ?? IF YOU NEED TO SHORTEN THEM I WOULD LOOK IN TO GALVIIZED THICK WALL PIPE IN THE SMALL DIA. I HAD TO DO THAT WITH MY REM. 2.3 JUST A THOUGHT |

RE: DL-50 engine
ORIGINAL: skorman I have a DL50 on order for my GP Ultimate. Unfortunately it is the Chinese lunar new year and DL is getting no shipments from China. It's been around 10 days since I placed my order and Bob at DL told me they will hopefully get a shipment at the end of this week. That's fine with me but the only problem I have is that they charged my credit card at the time of order without informing me they had no engines to ship. Though our shipments seem to get to us in Aust pretty quick as were closer to China. Cheers Scott |

He said he shortened the engine box/moved firewall back 1/2" and then used the stock standoffs. Might be another way of doing it if you havent already glued together. Cheers Scott. |
RE: DL-50 engine
To all of you newbees with DL50's on order or just got them. Save yourself some grief, ditch the spark plug that comes with the engine and buy the recommended NGK CM-6. I'm two for two on the plugs. They last a couple of gallons of gas than start acting up. Also put a filter in the line feeding your carb, as well as in your gas can, I had to clean the screen in the carb plus clean the entire carb 2-3 times. This is not a problem with the DL50, it can happen with any engine. Two weeks ago I had a deadstick because of this issue and with the money invested in these bigger planes, you can't afford deadsticks. I just finished installing filters on both my engines and also put a "crap trap" filter on the vent lines. The DL50 is a real good engine and a great value.

You guys make engine mounting much too difficult and expensive. Picture below of cheap and easy standoffs that are a lot better than metal ones having tiny little feet. If you need a box to stiffen up the firewall because the engine torques too much then simply add 1/8" ply to the outside of the wood standoffs, turning them into a box. I've used them from 28CC up to 115cc so far. Years of use and never a problem. That's 3/4" square poplar available at most hardware stores. Each of those legs is good for a few tons of pressure.
For gas filters just run on down to the local lawn and garden or saw shop and pick up 2 of the filtered clunks in the picture. One is the gas tank and the other in the gas can. They are heavy enough to keep the pick up in the fuel. The felt breaks up air bubbles and picks up every last drop of gas in the tank. yes, they are a bit large and they will fit through the opening of every gas tank I've seen so far. |

[link]http://www.mcmaster.com[/link] and [link]http://www.microfasteners.com[/link]. Take a gander at what they have to offer in 10/32 allen head cap screws and I know you will find everything you need for less than you would spend at a store. While your there order some 45, 50, and 55mm bolts for the prop. You'll need them eventually as you start experimenting with different props. They are not all the same in hub thickness.
I'm certain that after you peruse what those companies have to offer you will never get in a bind over hardware selections again. |

Great. Thank you very much, TOM. Mcmasters has it all.:)

RE: DL-50 engine
Hey guys can i use this DL50 motor for the new Aeroworks Extra 300LP? will this motor cut it, and will i come across haters on this motor of choice, since it seems most all 50cc planes are advertising with the DA pretty much? Just need constructive opinion because this motor is offered at a very good price and seems like next to no probs
Thanks for the input! Louie |
RE: DL-50 engine
Yes, the DL will work fine in the AW Extra.
And unless DA is paying you to fly their engines, you don't owe anybody an explanation. Unless somebody asks why your engine has significantly less midrange burble. |
