RE: DL-50 engine

I had the same problem with my DL50 running rough. I changed the original plug to a CM6 and it's like a different engine. Smooth as can be.

Same here! I thought I was really dumb about tuning. Changed the plug and what a difference.

RE: DL-50 engine

Hey thanks guys. Yea tried a differnt bat JAP, same thing. Im @ 5.5 volts, which I think is what a fresh charged 4.8 hovers around. I also from the get go tossed the stock plug for NGK. I also directly plugged the bat into the ign as JAP suggested, and same thang. Oh well, at least I was'nt in a hover when it started acting up! Got a new IGN coming.........Thanks 871

Hey guys can you tell me if a 16oz fuel tank is okay for the DL-50 please?

Yes is fine if you're not on a tuned pipe. Should give you up to 15 minutes flight time depending on your flying style. Set the transmitter's timer to 10 minutes to start with.

RE: DL-50 engine

No tuned pipe. I had 550cc in there and that is about 18oz but could not find one and mine was not very good and kept leaking. Thanks

RE: DL-50 engine

I have a DL-50 with a 16 oz tank. I set my tx to 8 minutes. I end up with 4-6 ounces left after a flight. I could probably set the timer to 10 minutes and that would be the max I'd want to go. If you want 15 minute flights you'll need the 20oz. I have a DLE-55 with a 20 oz tank and set my timer to 10 minutes. I think I have a half a tank left. I could probably set it to 12-15 minutes if I wanted to. I don't need to fly that long.

JoeAirport what are you running in your DL50<regular  or premiun gas

RE: DL-50 engine

I'm with Joe, I had a 16oz set up on one of my DL50's and I had the timer set at 10 min. It left a bit in the tank, but not alot. Maybe 12 minutes and it would be out.

RE: DL-50 engine

I use Regular. Premium is not needed with these engines.

RE: DL-50 engine

Both of the planes I fly that use a DL-50 have a 24 oz. tank (GP 27%Extra 330S ARF and GPEdge ARF). I was adjusting the timer on my Edge just today and have it set to 12 minutes. After I landed I checked the tank and had about 1/4 of a tank remaining, so that's a safe margin for me. Keep in mind the plane is a little overpowered with a 50 so I don't use full-throttle much at all.

Oh, and I'm using Amsol @ 80:1.

I'm also using Amsoil Saber 80:1, 89 octane gas, MTW pipe and header. Timer is set to 14 minutes and I then have 1/4 tank remaining.

RE: DL-50 engine

I have had a DL 50 for about a year. I ran it through two other planes and recently crashed, hard at full throttle trying to pull out of a manuever that went wrong. (EF 88" Yak bit the dust http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...msn/crying.gif, Hi Joeairport)

I have since put the motor in another plane and tried to start it. It runs at idle but won't advance to more than 25% of it's potential and it pops loudly and frequently when I advance the throttle.

I removed the carb, checked the reeds/good, checked the one way gasket/good, checked and cleaned the high and low needle ports/good, checked the inlet screen on the carb/had a little fine back stuff but only maybe 10% plugged, replaced the pulse tube, checked the voltage input from the Smart Fly/good at 6V on the nose, checked the diaphram/good or flexible and not torn, put a used back up ignition in with same results.

Guys at the field said it was set too rich, we leaned out the high speed screw all the way closed and no change, still sputter pop pop!! and no spool up.

It is real hard to start without flooding it?? Never used to be though. It used to spring to life on the 3rd flip every time.

I'm at a loss and don't want to buy a new motor after just spending a boat load of cash on a new plane.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

RE: DL-50 engine

Check your timing. The drift key could be sheared off or the hub could be messed up.

Thanks are you guys puching holes in the sky or doing IMAC or 3D ?? I am doing pattern flying working my way up to IMAC. So I should be good to go at ten min and then go the the 18 oz later. Thank you very much. Eric

RE: DL-50 engine

If the drift key was sheared wouldn't the hub come off or at least spin on the shaft some? It looks like the magnet is in the same spot it always has been, with the motor mounted can down the magnet is directly on top of the shaft at the beginning of the compression stroke when you start to feel resistance.

I agree it sounds like a timing or fuel issue.

Is it possible I have an air leak in the case or bearing to case seal?

did this happen at the tri valley field on sunday  if so I remember the plane remove your plug and set the piston is at  (top dead center) then check to see where the magnet is at on the thrust plate and the sensor.  is it before t.d.c. or after it should be some where close to t.d.c.
if that all looks good you mite have a bad ign. module  you mite want to contact  the people that you bought the engine from or

Change Spark plug, Try different ignition, Check the pulse line to the engine from the carb.

Not sure it just started making a loud pinging noise after about 8 gallons of fuel. My thought is wrist pin bearing or rod bearing, thats why i need to get intouch with Bob because it should be under warranty.

jnj55024 Check your timing impack at full trottle can shear the key in the prop hub and cause a big timing problem, normally though the engine flat out will not start at all in this case.

RE: DL-50 engine

Yes I was at Tri Valley on Sunday. Is it possible I have a bad hall sensor? Ihad it on the bench, plugged a fresh 4.8V/5.4V Nicad pack into the ignition directly with a fresh plug in the plug socket not installed in the motor so I could watch it spark and got nothing as the magnet went under the sensor. It should spark every time the magnet goes under the sensor shouldn't it? I tried it with the spare ignition as well and nothing.

If this is the problem can these ahll sensors be bought anywhere by themselves?

And thanks to all of you who have tried to come up with a solution for me. I appreciate your efforts. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/thumbup.gif
