Seems as though the subject matter has changed quite a bit recently. IMHO perhaps we should get back to the DL-50/55 subject.
Yep Iagree. The threadtaken a bad turn IMO. Iwant to talk about gas engines.....like the DL-50. Not the philosophy of how one shouldflyscale RC planes.

I agree. As is often the case we get sidetracked. What started it for me was hearing so many times "why buy a much more expensive engine since you'll most likely destroy it long before it gets worn out".

Anyway, I'm anxious to finish my Spacewalker and get it in the air. The DL-50 will be more power than it needs for sure so barring any unforeseen problems, it should last forever!http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif

I think it was said in humor.

All I know is this is the best performing engine I ever owned. And I can actually get local support from Jodi at Valleyview. Amazing. I almost gave up on this hobby. All my gas engines let me down until this one.

Also...now I understand that in-cowl turbulants can affect the engine performance. And I have fixes for that. The velocity stack is a credit to Jodi at ValleyviewRC. Nice work dude.

You have the right to voice your opnion, and you have.

The day that I have to stay dead-on topic in each and every comment that I post, I'll never be back here again. I suspect that many others feel the same way. But it is only a suspicion, mind you. <G>

Has anyone heard of, or had an ignition go out on a dl? Ive flown mine about 10 times, and it seems my ign it cutting out on my 55 and its getting really bad now...... I have a regulated 5.5a on it. Just wanted to see if it was not totally uncommon thanks! 871

I hear ya. It's great to have a nice running engine isn't it? Jodi must have set you up Itake it?

I have had a DL-50 for a year and no problem. But Irun only 4.8V. The highest it gets is around 5.4V. I've had a DLE-55 for a couple months. Maybe 2 gallons. No problem so far. A buddy bought a DL-50 used and had to get a new ignition. Who knows what the guy before him did to it. So it's possible but I haven't heard many problems like that. Most use too high of voltage but it doesn't seem like you have that problem. You could try running a 4.8V battery straight in to eliminate the battery, regulator, or switchas the problem.

Well I figured out my fuel line size problem . How I ever got in my mind that 3/32 is bigger than 1/8 is beyond me .I guess i'll chuck it up to working nites and being a zombie all the time .LOL . Can't wait to get it going . It's been 10mph winds with higher gust for quite a while . It will be nice to have a 16lb plane .

I was looking at oil and it looks like a little can of lawn boy gives 32-1 with 2gal. of gas . Do I get premium or just regular ? Or do you guys go to the airport or boat launch to get ethynol free fuel ?

Any gas you want but get rid of the Lawnboy.

RE: DL-50 engine

Regarding the rough running engine. All ignitions fail eventually but I would be looking at the age and condition of the battery before blaming the ignition. One of the signs of a weak battery is a rough running engine. BTW, your ignition works as well at 4.8v as it does at 5.5. The voltage over 4.8 is shed as excess heat in the ignition components.

RE: DL-50 engine

I've run them on a single Lipo cell, no problems. Wouldn't do it in a plane though, I was just experimenting and it ran up to and over 7000 RPM without any issue. It was a 1320mah cell so I didn't spend the 3 hours running it to try and see where the lowest voltage operating point was.

JoeAirPort 06-13-2009 12:03 AM

RE: DL-50 engine

I had lousy luck with a 1-cell Lipo. My RCEXEL didn't like it. After I switched to a 4 cell it was great. Scott at Brillelli sold methe one cell lipo and swore it worked great. My experience was otherwise.

Thanks for the info guys. Its not my batt, its fresh, and the cut out is to quick for that. I guess @ 5.5v i assumed I was under the rated 6v and was good.

Is there a plug in aftermarket ign thats better, or should I just get a DL?

Thanks 871

I guess you can get a bad anything at one time or another. A young fellow at our field just bought a new DL-55. Wouldn't start. Had a bad ignition module right out of the box.

Tired Old Man 06-13-2009 11:31 AM

RE: DL-50 engine

With a few years of flying gassers and several ignition types, every time I had a weak batery the engine would run like crap. They would miss like crazy (a fast cut out) as soon as battery voltage fell off below about 4.5v. A CM-6 plug is just fine. None of the alternatives are any better for the engine type.

Because a battery is "fresh" does not always mean it's gtg. A weak cell in a new battery is a killer to useful run time. Other factors are extension lead connectors (never use an extension with a battery), pushing the plug cap only partially, broken wires, hall sensors with intermittant sensor pick up, and old switches.

JoeAirPort 06-13-2009 11:47 AM

RE: DL-50 engine

That's why I told Show 871 to plug a fresh 4.8 battery direct into the ignition to see if it's really the ignition. It bypasses the battery, regulator, and switch....and all those plugs in between. It very well could be the ignition but I'd rather eliminate all the other factors first. Then you don't end up with a spare ignition ;)

RE: DL-50 engine

I had the same problem with my DL50 running rough. I changed the original plug to a CM6 and it's like a different engine. Smooth as can be.
