RE: DL-50 engine

My DL-50. have read great things about these engines so i got one last week. I put it in the airframe monday and started it last night. I was shocked how it ran. I put fuel in put the choke on, turned it over 10 times switch the battery on and the engine spluttered after 2 more turns, choke of and the motor started 1st flick. I am so inpressed. It throttles great. One very pleased customer.:D

yea I know what you mean but that compression wont get me in the air:D

I am down in the shop now and just dosnt seem to have alot of back pressure when I flip the prop over

RE: DL-50 engine

It will,

It is could at this time but when you start it up and it warms up and after you shut it down you will notice more compression it is do to metal expantion.

RE: DL-50 engine

Will,

I'm breaking mine in with Valvoline 2Cycle (ashless dispersent) oil at 32:1. Exhaust smoke is hardly detecible, but the exhaust residue out the pipe is oily black. Motor runs fine with it. I plan to switch over to a pure synthetic later (still researching that decision). Although I've use Stihl oil in my Stihl chainsaws for years and they burn clean and hold up well to some darned hard use!

My DL didn't seem to have a lot of compression either....I could flip it past compression without a prop mounted. However, after running it a bit it has much more and "pops" over nicely.

i did no breaking in on any of my 3 DL's, went straight to 40:1 synthetic. I just ran one tank through on the ground in an airframe, to make sure it would idle and keep running, then flew....easy as that.

Not had a dead stick.....well just one...where i got carried away and forgot to set my timer...then ran out of fuel... [:@]

RE: DL-50 engine

I'm using lawnboy ashless at 32:1 for breakin. Talked to Bob at DL and he said to run about 20 oz through on the ground, lean for good idle and transition and go fly for a couple of gallons so that's what I'm in the process of doin. I'm using mobil 1 racing 2stroke synthetic on an evolution 26gt at 50:1 and Bob said it would be fine on the DL also, so once I finish up the 2gallons of lawnboy, I'll be switching over. Can't wait for the mobil, already tired of cleaning black "gunk" of my plane.[:o] One of the points of switchin to gas was to be able to have a cleaner plane after a days flying!:D

That is so true. My glow models are always a slimy mess. Gas is great!:D:D:D

I still bring the Fantastic with me....the gassers still have props, and the props still cut grass, and the grassy gunk still ends up on the plane... It a LOT less mess than the slimers, anyway...

RE: DL-50 engine

Still am not able to fly because of some access problems at my field. Hopefully next weekend. I started the engine today anyway. I am noticing a few improvments since i cleaned out the carb. First, after the engine caughs from the cholk it wants to start after every flip. Before, i herd nothing for 5-10 more strokes before it started to caugh and then start. Again, that is after it was cholked. Second, the engine has a noticably lower idle. It is still rough but is much lower than before. Finally, the transition is better and the needles are right at the factory settings. I am excited to fly again.

That is great to read. If you are at the factory settings, the low end will be rich, but it is better to gradually tweak that in as you get some time on it.
I'm happy it was your carb stuff!!! Good luck with it!!!

Today i noticed a little play on bearings. I dont know if its front or rear. Engine works quiet but i can feel it with my hand. Is this normal? Engine has about 4 liters throuh it.

Hey Guys,
here is my latest project, a OMP Hybrid Edge 92 wing span weight in at 16lb 10oz. Should fly great with the DL up front.

Side-to-side? or front-to-back?

Jim

Unfortunately it seems to be a minor side-to-side play. During przevious flights i noticed front bearing is a little wet. And yesterday i felt the play. It is a really minor play but i cant sleep knowing it is.

It also clangs a little when i turn the crank shaft quickly right and left, especially when its worm.
