Matt,
You've got a few options. Probably the best is to, pack up your Q40's in 2 card-board boxes with plenty of bubble wrap and ship them out there via FedEx. That's what I do... However, when I travel overseas we don't ship our stuff. We take it with us on the airplane and pay the $600 oversize/excess baggage charges. I use the sportube snowboard case to hold the wings. It's adjustable in length as well, kind of nice. Works like a champ. I use an aluminium box to crate the fuses. Huge pain in the ***** carry all that stuff through the airport... Expecially coming home going through customs.
But for the US travel. I'd just ship your stuff a week or so in advance, in card-board boxes.

Sounds good, but dad really wants to try to get something re-usable, like a fiberglass case or something that is light.

Something re-usable is always a good thing. It almost doesn't matter what you ship, they'll hammer pretty good either way. Travis had some company make up a white plastic coragated(sp) material, into a triangular box.. It's lasted for serveral years. Let me see if I can round up some info on that. I think he paid nearly $185 bucks for it...

I'm sticking with the big aluminum box. Its the only thing I feel safe shipping. I've had wooden boxes that have been damaged, and I've seen gun cases dissapear so I wouldn't recommend those. I've used cardboard like Randy, and it does work pretty good. I prefer it over wood, thats for sure. Just get double wall cardboard quite a bit bigger than the size you really need and have the planes float in the center sorrounded by popcorn and foam. Leaves a nice mess in the hotel room.
Personally, I think the big aluminum boxes are the safest best, but it also costs the most to ship. I ship the aluminum box, and a 2nd box with my tools / flight box / accesories for about $60 - 70 each way (ground), and carry my transmitters / chargers on the plane. Best bet is to find a driver that hauls your stuff

have tried them all but the best by far is folded corrugated cardboard folded into the appropriate box size, and painted bright yellow- yes travelled to CZECK with 3 F3d pylon models 2 1/2 years ago, models arrived non damaged, cardboard box likewise, and since then the same box has been to australia. Always take the box on the same flight regards trevor henderson
