Do you agree with all the theory being thrown about re: dummy radials creating adverse handling?
That seems to be the consensus, although none of us has actually tested the theory.
I recall you had troubles when you were running a spinner.
What are your thoughts?

well just to let everyone know i aquired one a few months back, sitting in a corner of my hanger until i can get a few projects out of the way. this one has not been flown but it is second hand. so i will be going through everything the previous owner has done (not sure why but this one has wire flying wires and not the streamlined wires) has this been offered both ways???????
anyway i spent several hours going through this long thread sat. so at least now i have an idea what i am up against lol

Todd,
A word of advice on the flying wires: They are the only thing that holds this airplane together in flight. Not sure what the previous owner did with the factory flying wire material, but were I you, I would acquire it.
The only place cable is used is the underside of the aircraft spanning from each gear to the fuselage bottom.

richard i was thinking the same thing about the flying wires. they do seem up to the task but i have not load tested them yet. there are a couple pieces missing from the plane so i will need to place a order, may as well get the correct flying wires
i have seen dirty dingus' plane fly and have chatted with him about the geebee. i do have to admit he is a fantastic pilot with that plane, sure makes it look easy. but i know better, this is one plane that will bite you if you relax for a minute! i had (crashed) a 1/4 page r2 years ago, got too slow on final and hit the go stick too fast, torque rolled into the dirt.

Eagledancer
Thanks for the kind words but I have to admit the Gee Bee has bitten me as well. There are some scrapes on the top of the cowl and fin from a slide down the runway on it's back. I leave them there to keep me from getting over confident.

I would love to snag one of thse instead of the Moki(If I didn't already have a 215):
http://www.slengines.com/constellation_en.html
Mainly because of the closed rockers and the extra cylinders.. Same Diameter as the Moki 215/250 and really has a lot of refinements over the Moki in my opinion..

that was advertised on their web site. But unfortunately I've never seen the engine. That's the hard truth. That site is still in exactly same shape as it was before (under construction) Yeah right.
Just don't be tempted, otherwise you'll get screwed.

I spoke to Mario von http://www.seidel-props.de.
It´s no problem to send a prop to the US. Even other engines and sizes are possible.
The costs:
1x for example 30x14 Prop ready to fly without paint is € 180.- Euro (paint € 20.-)& shipping to the US € 40.- Euro.
The prop ist tested up to 6620rpm, but Mario says he did a securitycheck up to 9890rpm and everything was ok, it was onlyvery loud
Contact: Mario Seidel - [email protected]
Questions? Feel free to contact me.

@ n8622t: I know, it´so expensive, but sooo hot!!!
What do you mean with: "that center hub is some serious lumber!!!!" I cannot translate it into german, I don´t know what you want to say, sorry.
This morning I mount the DA 150 into the Gee Bee R2:

There may be several sources, but my graphics source of choice is Kirby's Kustom Vinyl Graphics
http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/kirbysgraphics/
I have relied upon Dennis Kirby for many years to provide quality graphics for all my aircraft.
He is quick, reliable, and his graphics go on well and stay put!
He already has the CARF Gee Bee graphics in his product line.

LOL!! Hey Hannes, I was wondering if that may have been too much slang for you but, the thickness of the props wood where it bolts onto the engine is really thick! Lumber is a word referring to large amounts of cut wood that may be used in construction. Here in the US we have stores that sell wood for building houses or any other construction job that may require wood, we call those stores "Lumber Stores". Sorry to confuse you, keep the posts coming on the GB

Thanks Richard, I can get those on order, now Im just waiting for the credit card bill to come in to pay off the Christmas purchases then I can place my order for the GB. It will be a good time to order since the overwhelming Christmas volume will be totally depleted leaving lots of room for big boxes to go through with a lesser chance for damage.

Merry Christmas for everyone!!!
@ n8622t: ok My english is not so good, but most of the things I can understand. But this time, it was not possible for me**
Today I workd on the Gee Bee again.
The ignition is mount, the tank is siiting only as a trial and the door fits:

Hannes, are you going to repaint the GB with the original colors or are you going to customize the finish? I like what you are doing with the firewall, I dont agree with the fuel tank mount, the location is fine but I would use some velcro and foam rubber between the tank and the platform, I would also get the ignition back inside the fuselage to keep the electronics away from the heat. Just my thinking

Here is my engine dome and tank tray set up.
Mounted behind the mightly 3W157CS I have the ignition module, throttle servo, and Zeus.
The "Zeus" is a battery elimination and engine kill combo built and sold by 42% Products.
The engine dome plywood reinforcement and Tank Tray parts are included in the newer kits and I HIGHLY recommend the engine dome reinforcement for anything over 100cc.
The tank tray can be used for any combination of gas tank, smoke tank, batteries or other equipment.

The Gee Bee will paintcompletely new in red/white and gets the Delmar Benjamin decals.
My Gee Bee KIT is a old one, I bougt it cheap on eBay.But theprevious owner did some things on this airplane. I have to cut a lot of things out of the plane and have to rework a lot of things. It would be better for me he didn´t some work on this plane. I think he was a complette beginner and had no idea whats to do on this plane.
The tank mounting is perfekt on this way. I did it with gum, velcro and foam rubber on my last planes. This is all bad. The tanks slides in the platform forwards and backwards. On this way the tank is fixed, at the front an back there also come a pice of wood to fix the tank into the right position!!
The ignition I always put at the firewall, never be a problem. I built up all this things at the firewall, when I have to demount it I can remove the screws witch bind the fuselage and the firewall and drag off the complette unit out of the fuselage. The only thing I have to cut is the throttle servo cable.

Time to balance this beast... Actually, this is something you should do LONG before it is ready to fly... Rather, start looking at balance when you begin your on board equipment placement as there are many variables: Engine weight, Canisters vs. stock exhaust, servos used, pilot or no pilot, even the weight of fiberglass and gel coat will vary from plane to plane, so do not wait until everything is in place only to find that your aircraft is grossly out of balance.
I have marked two locations on the underside of wing: 75mm and 80mm. I measure the wing chord as 423mm, so these CG locations calculate to between 18% and 19%. Benjamin / Wolf found that the ideal full size CG was 18%.
At present, mine balances at 75mm, actually leaning just ever so slightly towards being nose heavy. This IS GOOD, since I must still add the TW axle, cockpit window material and may yet add a cockpit dash. On a Gee Bee R2, EVERY addition aft of CG MUST be considered!
I have used a heavy CF prop for balancing, but will probably first fly it with a lighter wood prop.
Bottom line is that you want to keep the CG between 18% and 20%, with 20% being the absolute limit.
An EZ Balancer is invaluable for big planes, although I had to make much wider spreader bars to accommodate this preciously pugnacious PIG

Thanks for the update Richard. I've been scratching my head about how I'm going to balance my GeeBee. I haven't seen those EZ Balancers before, looks very neat. You mentioned you made some extended tubes to accomodate the width? Was that easy enough to do? Just some aluminum section?
thanks

Yes, just aluminum angle stock. Very easy to acquire and make.
I also spoke with Pete Chagares, who builds the EZ Balancer, and he asked me to send pictures and measurements... this could mean he will offer the longer bars as an accessory?
The EZ Balancer seems somewhat expensive, but when you consider its robust, high quality construction and that it will be the LAST balancer you will ever purchase - not to mention the aircraft you may save from damage or destruction or simply enjoy flying so much more - the cost is comparatively very low.
