What covering to let stained wood grain show through?
Is there a good strong transparent method to cover balsa sheeting so the stained woodgrain will show through? I have a FunAero, 65 inch wingspan Albatross. The fuselage is balsa sheeted and I would like to stain parts of it and clearcoat it, the rest will be painted. The wings will be covered with solartex or similar but I would like to have some of the fuselage wood grain showing if possible. Any help woul;d be greatly appreciated.

You are probably using a glo engine, so it would need to be fuel proof. Use silk and butyrate dope. You could use 1/2 oz f/g cloth with dope. Water base poly like Minwax Polycrylic would work, but I do not believe it is fuel proof. As I use just gas engines for the last 30+ years, I don't worry about being fuel proof.

Thanks for your input. I will be using electric power, so fuel is not a problem. I wasnt sure which cloth/resin combination would be most transpartent.
