Default Control Setup Question......

Hi All!

Well, I'm having a ball flying my new Wild Hare Edge 540, especially after getting the G-62 to idle properly and not quit in the air!!! BTW, that was cured by rebuilding the carburetor. The only problem I'm having now is getting used to the pitch sensitivity of the airplane particularly when landing! The problem I am having is that everytime I apply a little bit of "UP" elevator to slow the decent of the airplane (I'm not talking about the "flair", but much earlier in the approach), the plane really wants to "balloon" up and gain a lot of altitude. Of course, I'm using low rates for landing, but that doesn't seem to be enough! Would using exponential on the elevator help this problem? I'm new to this, so I'm not sure if exponential is intended to decrease sensitivity near the center of the elevator travel (which I think I want), or near the endpoints of the elevator travel? Someone at the field arbitrarily said "add 8 ounces of weight to the nose", but I'm suspect of that advice without some more input! This may just be inexperience, so other possibilities are that I just just learn to live with it, or create a set of "landing" rates which are lower than my current "low" rates. What do you guys think is the best solution??

Thanks,

John

You are correct on both points. Expo will decrease the sensitivity around neutral. My first flight on the Edge was also a little twitchy until I got used to it. It has a very effective elevator if your CG is at the back of the recommended range, were mine is. I too am an all thumbs, newbie to this stuff. I have found that a little extra expo helps a lot until you get your fingers trained. I have found that the Edge flies very slowly at the low rates without running out of elevator. Heck, the thing practically will not stall if your idle is to high, it just cruises along slowly.

If you don't have any expo programmed into your radio you may want to give it a shot. I typically run anywhere from 50% to 65% expo on my elevator, depending on the bird. I've got a P-51 that is very sensitive on the elevator so I have 65% expo on the elevator, whereas on my 28% Laser 200 I have 50% expo dialed in. Start with 30% or so and go from there. Good luck!

I typically run flight modes for my planes. One for precision aerobatics, one for 3D and one for landing/rolling loops and circles. All of my rates and certain mixes are assigned to a single switch so there's no guesswork.

[8D]sounds as if your cg is a tab to far back. Before adding weight. Check your cg, if more is need up front, move something. (anything before adding lead). You may even go to a heaver spinner. The expo will help alot, but only if your not to tail heavy. astro
