RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I bought the same tube also, they are for sale in the marketplace, comes out about $32.00 shipped. It seems to be good quality, and the fit is good. I may be a little paranoid, but it seems like the tube wall is a little thin. Not sure yet if I would want to do any violent power on blenders and so on.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
The wall thickness is 1mm which is the same thickness as the tubes TBM sells similar to this diameter. Its about the same thickness as the stock aluminum tube and you know carbon is better than that cheesy alum. I wouldn't worry about the strength, the wing would probably fail before the tube.

my vote..is AFPD..it is on my wife's Xmas list that I supplied. (hope she got it mailed to Santa in time?)
Greg..I did not put the tank in tunnel..as I would guess a hard landing would pretty much wipe it out. Fixing the landing gear is enough!
I did make a slide out tray in it for my smoke tank and have it ready to install..I just did not want the extra weight on plane till after I maiden.
As for the wing bolts..loosen the two velcro straps..slide tank to one side..do the bolt..with a wrench head or finger fins..then slide to other side.
Easiest way I found to do. I guess another solution would be a skinny tank or like you said mount in the tunnel. Your call.

flight sim..the think I don't like about realflght..is you have additional costs of the extra volumes...if you total the price I spend on G2 + all the volumes
I could have got a round trip ticket to Vegas and back!

I need a little help picking out a new engine for my yak, I sold the Evolution 58 that was on it and am trying to decide on it's replacement. I am considering a da 50, 3w 55 and zdz 60, also, for nearly the same weight as the 58 I could put a zdz 80 on there. So what do you guys think?

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
The only measurement that I used to mount my DA-50 on the firewall was the side to side measurement with the 1/4" offset for the right thrust then I mounted the engine as far down as possible on the firewall, it will come pretty close to center but not perfect. If you look at the thrust line on the wing cord it will be just at the bottom of the firewall and if you wanted the engine directly on the thrust line which is center the only way that this will happen is with a larger firewall from top to bottom, the width is fine. The last time there was a revision for the so called manual this was in it, so just mount it as far down as possible that is if you do not want to make a new firewall to get it directly on center. Hope this makes sense and that it helps.

I know for a fact that the 3W55 has a ton of power, however it's a little heavier that the others. I had one on an GP Ultimate and this thing would go to the moon and back at half throttle. As far as the ZDZ 80 I think it would be an insane amount of power, we're talk'in ANIMAL !! However it would be quiet interesting.

greyhound..you put the earth shakin 3w80 in your 30%, you be the man! Personally, it is way too much engine..and I have the 80 in my 33% and it's an ANIMAL! You better stick to 50-60cc..
and here I would suggest the DA-50, fair price, performance, weight, service, resale value..not one engine can match all 5.

I have zdz50 and da-50.
The zdz50 just blew spark plug out of hole..and the little tiny spring in the cap is gone..now zdz wants a whole new igntion for that. duh! I think I will screw a spring on the top of the spark plug..good ole American ingenuity.
My da-50 has crashed 3 planes due to bad carbs. Sent engine back to DA and they replaced carb FREE even out of warranty, but the fact remains, 3 planes is alot of bucks gone!
I have a 3w 60 old style and its a stump puller..but I also have seen the 3w55us and it is a very nice strong running engine..more pull than my DA-50.
I would love to see BME release that mystical 55 they have been touting for almost a year...but don't think I
want to get on THAT waiting list. My friend just installed him 58 EVO in a cap..hope we dont have problems.??
bobz
P.s. then there is my G-62 with ignition. unbelievable torque!

How about a G-62 within a couple of ounces (4 oz I think) of the DA-50 that will turn a 23X8 near 7000 rpm?
see http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_41...tm.htm#4108876
You can get the G-62 either here in the marketplace for near 300 bucks and send it in for the 175 dollar conversion. Ad an Abel Hobbies muffler for 60 bucks you might have a good combo with more punch than the DA.
The real question is how might the mid range power be for smoothness.

Yeah, I have the DA-50 as well. Have about 7-8 gallons thru it and on 100 to one Amsoil. Could never get the mid range burble to thin out. Top end power is great though.
Anyone have any first hand on the Kroma 50 weight and power appear to be similar to DA.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I wish I had gone with a ZDZ 60 or 80 on my YAK. I have the DA-50 and yes it does fly it. It will hover, but for IMAC a big outside loop or long stall turn doesnt flow very well. Starts fast and slows way down at the top.
I would have never suggested this until I flew my new plane, a CA models(aeroworks) 31% extra 300(93"WS). It has a ZDZ 80 and weighs 21.5 lbs. Yes its a touch over powered but thats what the throttle servo is for. Also a 26X10 prop provides such large thrust area, the control surfaces seem lots less quirky. My 80 does have some vibration but its soo worth it. If I dont sell my YAK, I may put a ZDZ 60 or 80 on it. Ultimately I wish my YAK could lose 2 pounds and I would enjoy it more with the DA-50.

RDB127
I asked the owner of DR hobbies (Doug )the same question and he said the DA-50 is nearly similar in power. Once broken in the Kroma has ~100 more rpm's. I would seriously consider a Kroma should I need one in the future, the 180 will smoke a DA 150 (both great engines).

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Super D,
I am thinking the same thing as you as far as balance and power. I had problems balancing the plane with my DA50, and ended up with three (3) 2700ma 4 cell batteries (Very Heavy) attached to the engine box just to balance at the recommended balance point.
I am thinking about going with the 3w-56 twin engine which is one (1) lb heavier that the DA50, then using 3 Lithium-ions for power, which should allow me to move the batts for balance. The only thing keeping me from this is the price of the engine over the cost of just buying a different plane. I already have a 102" QQ Yak with a DA100.
The 3W56 is about the same power as the ZDZ60.
What do you think?
BR, Mark

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
bobz, I'm not sure I understand your last post #3137 regarding engine reccomendations??? In post #2985 on page 120 you emphatically reccomend the DA-50. I haven't purchased and engine yet for this bird, and I want to make the best choice and look to you and others for your expertise. I was heading down the DA-50 path, but now I'm confused, what do I do???
Thanks,
Joe RC
bobz, here is post #2985:
as far as engine for yak..30%, you will find lots of thread on what engine for almost any 27% to 30%, and the majority rules:
DA-50
in a nutshell - service, engineering, light, strong, support (rcflyers), and fair price...ok..last thing AMERICAN MADE!
bobz
Thanks,
Joe RC

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Joe RC,
I have 5 planes with the DA50 and the motors are GREAT!!!
The problem is trying to balance the plane. The early instructions recommend a ZDZ60 for power. After I built mine, the plane is very tail heavy, even with the Pull/Pull Rudder!
So, to balance mine, I had to install 3 great big heavy batteries in the engine box.
Since you have not bought an engine yet, I would look at the ZDZ or the 3W56 twin for power. Both engines weigh about the same 4.10 lbs.
Only a suggestion.
BR, Mark

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Lockjaw equal power I would opt for the twin, less vibration. Wonder if it will fit in the cowl very well. Oh the twin would have to weigh more though, than the ZDZ 60, if nothing else 2 mufflers.
Ouch just looked at the 3W $895 with no mufflers. ZDZ 60 $720 with a pitts muffler is my pic or the 80 is just .2lbs more. Seems like Diamond Dave had a ZDZ 80 on his due to high altitude, unfortunately his was short lived due to a switch or something.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Ok here are my thoughts on balancing, my first yak with a zdz 50 I had everything, and the kitchen sink as far forward as possible to get it to balance properly. With the 58 I have everything mounted around the CG and balanced easily, so using one of these heavy brick's of an engine is not a terrible problem.
I did a little investigation on "advertised weights" of the engines I mentioned earlier, this is all from MFR's websites
DA 50: 47oz
ZDZ 50: 53oz
3W 55: 67oz
ZDZ 60: 63oz
ZDZ 80: 68oz
and what I am comparing them to Evolution 58: 64oz

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Super D,
The 3W56 weighs the same as the ZDZ60, and 3W makes an exhaust that weighs only 6.6oz and is a dual inlet single can muffler! So, the motor should work, and the spark plugs should just clear.
The problem that I have with the 30% Yak is that a 33 or 35% plane would not be that more expensive if looking at the 3W56.
BTW, where do you have your CG set?
BR, Mark

Ill just throw it out there for ^%$#s and gigles go with the zdz 80 with side or pitts muffler and a 3 blade 24/10 it'll have the power to weight of a shockey lol drop the spinner to offset the other weigth that is involved over your 58cc if you wanted too can you say 20 snaps on the up line babe
you wont be happy with the vertical power with the 50cc after that 58cc hard decision
