RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Hi guys!
I have a NIB 1/3 scale Spacewalker, and saw the post about the Tartan Twin. I also have this engine, forget the cc displaement, but I bought it at a LHS years ago as part of an estate sale. Paid $300 for it.Does anyone have any more info on these engines?
Thanks !
Ed
PS- I have been collecting a few giant scale kits from time since kits are slowly dying out, giving way to ARF's.
I also have a Ikonwst 90A Monocoupe, and Bud Nosen Mr Mulligan, a cliipped wing T-Craft ( all unbuilt), also a Jim Bridi Shrike Commander, and a 1/5 scale Travel Air Mystery Ship, also have apartially built 1/4 scale Lnier Laser, and a Lanier 1/3 scale Laser , partially built.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Ed,
Here is where I'm
at with my Tartan.
It's set up for glow with
a Walbro carb below on a
phenolic adapter with the reed
valves.
I knew nothing about this engine
before a few weeks ago, so info is
sketchy, at best. The following info
is from what I have been able to
glean from RCU searches, which
results in very scattered info, talking
to people locally & calling Jim Cline (sp?).
1) I have built a hefty text stand.
2) Closing in on getting a gallon of
Methyl Alcohol. Jim Cline (sp?) suggested
mixing 1 gallon of 5% glow fuel with 1
gallon of MA. = 2.5% Nitro & about 9%
oil...
3) I will test run without onboard glow,
and then buy one if required from LHS.
Bill said around $65 for a good one. He
suggested using a spare channel for
on & off with a switch. This made sense.
4) I will probably drill & tap the carb adapter
for a fuel nipple to prime the engine. Jim Cline.
5) I read here on RCU that someone was having
problems with their Tartan reversing while in flight.
I will delve into that one & do some thorough testing
on the stand. I hope onboard glow is the cure for
this problem.
Again all testing will be done on the test stand, prior
to going to the trouble mount it on the firewall. I have
had both negative & positive comments about this
engine. If runs at all, I believe it will be a great
combo with the SW.
I will add more comments, if I can think of anything
else note worthy.
Good Luck!
Johnny C!

Bob Shattleroe still makes landing gear. I just bought one for my 1/3 BUSA Cub Scheduled to be done for next season - $43.50 plus $8 shipping - very reasonable - $10.00 for bungee covers. Should give you an idea of what the Spacewalker gear will cost you. I have a set that is sized somewhere between the two I bought from a buddy that supposedly would fit my Cub - I will measure sometime and post that. Bob's E-Mail is [email protected], his mailing is Bob Shattleroe, 7577 Scenic Hwy, Rising Fawn, GA 30738. It was much more convenient when he lived by my buddy Larry, I had immediate access to anything I needed. For years you could also buy his gear at the Toledo show. He still ships product very timely, so I guess that is just as good.
My scanner died so I can't attach the pictures I would like to - which were taken before digital camera's (anyone remember film) , but here are a few I have on the computer.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
My Spacewalker weighs 22 pounds all up ready to fly with fuel - which I found to be on the light side of what the other guys had with theirs. I could have shaved off maybe a pound or so had I not used so much paint. Spacewalker yellow doesn't cover very well - takes many many coats. If I were to do it over, I would use a silver or aluminum basecoat before the yellow -which should result in less coats to cover.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I'm inviting myself to this discusion. I just bought this kit and will be starting on it in a few weeks. Its nice to see a discussion on it since it will answer alote of my questions along the building process. I was thinking of buying a G38 for it. From what I can read in here it seems to be a right choice. Could anyone confirm this.
Looking foward to share information.
Many thanks.

Glad you can join the thread. I purchased a G-38 for mine based on advise from someone who had one and flew it with the engine. I need to finally finish mine as you see from the start of this thread that was almost two years ago. I plan on finishing it this winter and maidening it in the spring.
Welcome and post pics of your progress.

What do you guys think about an OS 300 twin
vs the Tartan. I have a line on a almost new
one for a really good price. I have a little
more confidence in the OS over the Tartan.
The OS would certainly sound better. too!
Let me know what you think!

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
one of the guys in our club has an OS 300 twin in his s/walker. Sounds great, and has plenty of power for scale type manouvers etc.
Cheers, Dave.

Dave,
Thanks for the input.
I can get the 300 for a great
price, & our OS engines have
always been the best. I guess
it's really a no brainer. There
are a lot of questions about the
Tartan. But I don't think there
are any about the OS...
Time to clean out the Pay Pal account...
Thanks!

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I have owned two Os 300's. My wife bought my second one at my request for our 26th anniveristy. The flame outs and subsequent dead sticks cost me way too many bad landings and an eventuall stall killing the airframe. Great sounding engines. I consider myself a pretty good engine guy but I would have to say that the 300 left me a little cold. The 160 twin with the air bleed carb runs like a clock where as the 300 is quite a bit more demanding. I have tried it with a pump, header tank, etc. Probably needs on board glow when going to idle. I know I will hear a lot of flak on this but any engine that requires any kind of special consideration that is not consistent does not belong on an airframe that that takes 100's of houurs to compltete. The 300 is beautiful but power to weight ratio is horrible. The sound of silence when you have just cleared the fence at the end of the run way is not something to dream of. Go with a gas engine with electronic ign. More power, less weight less dollars, less heart ache. Not to mention building a 2 piece cowl to fit the Spacewalker. I had a friend with the OS 4 cylinder, what a star. It sounded like a VW going by. Conflicting info I know. I love the sound of the OS twin.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I have a Saito 270 which has flown a lot of flights without losing a cly. let alone a flame out and I do not have an onboard glow. That being said if I put that engine in an airframe that took "100's of hours to complete" I would have an onboard on it. It is very cheap insurance.

I was intending to use onboard glow...
More thoughts & comments on the 300
please....
Please also tell me it's better than the Tartan...
The nice thing is that I don't have to commit to
either engine for a while...
Thanks for the input!

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
In my spacewalker instruction manual they mention that there is two photo packs available for the spacewalker. I called Sig and they told me that these items were no longer available. Does anyone know of a web site that catters to the full size spacewalker? I would like to build mine fully scale but I require pictures and data to do so. I will be putting NAV lights in this bird, does anyone have any experience with the nav lights offered by Electro Dynamics?
Any information would be greatly apreciated.
Thank you.
