RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Great! I just started punching and sanding last night. Yes, I have been through this thread and I am glad to have this information readily available. I used the thread on the H-9 Cesnna 182 while building and really enjoyed missing alot of unplanned issues!

I to am going to start on one soon. I'll be putting a G62 in the nose as I would like to set it up as a tug but I need to do some research on this part. I'm going to do a bit of a thread on the building on my clubs site http://groups.msn.com/cmac

Mine flies great on a Saito 2.70. Plenty of power and the sound is awesome! Balanced on the money with no ballast. McDaniel onboard glow with a small 1100 mAh NiCad AA 4 cell pack for power lets me fly all day. Starts first flip every time. Incredibly easy to land... just floats in and will fly at an unbelievably slow speed. Fantastic airplane!
Picture below shows the Spacewalker with my Byron Staggerwing Beech, both 2.70 powered.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I have also read about using a Super Tigre G-3000 in Sigs manual. Question to for anyone that has flown with the G-3000 or G-38? Their comments? Would they do it again? I have been throught the threads and ready about someone using a G62 (I have one), but that seems to be a lot of power.
I look forward to reading any pro's and cons on the subject matter.
Thanks in advance!

Got my kit today. Not too impressed with the quality of the plans though as they are quite fuzzy. Any one out there with a pic of a G62 powered one? Interested to see the engine/cowl setup. Cheers

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I bought a used one years ago with a G38. It weighed 25 pounds and was very lethargic. It flew just fine but the take off roll was horribly long. If your going to build, cover and paint heavy go with more power. I have a new one with a clipped wing (one piece) thats just over 16 pounds with the robart gear and a Sig First Place 2.4 ci eng (39.33cc). I have not flown it yet but I imagine with a little more power and 9 pounds less than my first one it should be great.

GaGeeBees,
I am building a 1/3 Spacewalker and have a Saito 3.00 twin to power it. I was wondering (and can't tell from your pictures); did you split the cowl horizontally, or just make cut outs for the cylinder heads and slip the cowl over the engine? If you did split the cowl, what procedure did you use to cut it? It would be nice to be able to leave it one-piece.
Glad to hear that your 2.70 is amply powerful. I thought about a gasser (ZDZ 40) which would have been plenty powerful. But, the horizontal cylinders are in keeping with the plane and a Spacewalker seems to be a perfect airframe for a big four-stroke. Can't wait to get mine in the air next spring.
Thanks for the information. rlmcnii

Hey I have just aquired one of these that had been crashed and I have finished repairing it now. It has a G-38 on it and weighs 23 lbs. What prop are you guys using on this set up? Seems awfully heavy for that engine, but I know some of you are using this same set up.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
an 18/8 on a G38. 23lbs is right in the ballpark for weight. It will fly in a very scale manner and do all scale manouvers just fine....no hovering
Cheers, Dave.

18x8 on my G38 as well. It's not on a Spacewalker but it is on a 25# airplane and pulls it around just fine.

Is that enough opening in the front of the cowl? Sorry no pic, but looks like all the others. Does it need to be baffled? I don't wanna burn the engine up.

I guess I am just kinda disappointed in this plane. I don't know if I will really get rid of it or not. It just is not the plane I was expecting. If I do let it go I will let you know.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I have one in the box waiting to be built and I know how it should fly scale but like you I would not be happy with a G38 in the nose. I will go with nothing less than a 50cc when I build. I had a GP 1/4 SW with a Saito 100 in it @ 10.5 lbs. and was only happy when I replaced it with an OS 120. I like the looks of the SW a LOT but flying it scale - read slow - is not in my plan. Some do, some don't

Mine doesn't seem terribly slow but it's certainly no pylon racer either. Mine is 2.5 lbs lighter than yours and the Saito 2.70 may offer a bit more "giddy-up" than your G-38. What prop are you using?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
no disrespect, but a Spacewalker is a scale type plane. In my humble opinion it does not look good going fast. Perhaps a different kind of plane may better suit your aspirations.A SW looks best flying scale-like, slow, and enjoy it for what it is.
As stated, no disrespect intended to anyone, just my .02c.
Cheers, Dave.
