RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
DrDeath. I'm interested to know if you have completed the Spacewalker yet. Followed your build and all the other interesting posts and have often wondered what the final outcome was. Am considering buying the kit in the next few months after finishing my latest project.

Hey Ron,
Thanks for the inquire. I have put the Spacewalker on the back burner for a couple of other projects. I purchased . The flying season came and I bought a few other planes that was put in front of the Spacewalker for flying this year. I plan on getting back to the build this winter. I really want to finish it so it will be ready for our main flying season in 07. Wwe fly all year where I live but with the white color, I will wait until spring. I plan on painting it with latex paint over the Worldtex covering. I should start back on the project after I finish the Aeroworks 260 I just bought . Too many planes, not enough time

Hi DD.
Thanks for your reply on the Spacewalker build. I'll keep an eye open for any further posts on this thread.
Wonder what happened to all those other builds that were taking place?

Hello Friends
here are some pictures from the first flights of my Spacewalker.
Meanwhile it has 5 hours on the log.
It is a really very good flying model.
Its almost imposible to put it into stall.
The landings are perfect. Its easy to achive nice 3 point landings.
The FT 300 is a very good match for this machine.
It runs with a 20x8 prop Master Aisrcrew (Classic). These are quite heavy props, and thats very Ok for this engine.
It needs only 1 flip for starting (!). This makes lot of fun.
Ok, you have to prime it quite sufficiently first.
Fuel consumption is moderate, 25 mins for 32 oz.
One weak point to be considered in this airplane are the wing joiners.
The aluminium wing joiner material is too soft for the tightening steel screws.
Generally they are to be tightened quite often, at least each time you assemble the machine for flying.
So it may happen, if they are tightened too often and too properly the thread goes damaged (as happened to me).
In general however, this is a great, big, nice flying model.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
the wing joiner screws don't have to be really tightened down, snug is ok. I've never had one fall out after many years of flying.
Your s/walker looks great. Congratulations on building a fine looking plane.
Cheers, Dave.

Hello Eftat,
Well done! The Spacewalker looks terrific.
I've just started to build mine so am many months (?) away from flying. Can you tell us more about the model, like what type of finish you have : Fabric cover, dope and enamel? From the photos it does not appear to be a plastic film.
I'd also be interested to know where you got the pilot from@ Really finishes the model nicely.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Stacy,
I am curious about the rpm you are getting with the OS and MA 20 - 8. I have been running a Saito 270 for a while and get 6500 ( safely ) on a 20 - 10 MA. I have a 1/3 Spacewalker kit and was wondering if the 270 was enough or should I trade up to a 300 OS or Saito.
I sort of like the look of the OS rocker covers better than the Saito but if I'm not going to get much more performance from the 300 I may not bother.
Thanks ....................

It looks great! Exactly the same paint scheme as mine will have.
What technic did you used? It's painted or stripes were cut and glued over the covering?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Covering material is Koverall from Sig as proposed in the building instructions of this kit.
It is a plain, white, similar to silk, polyester fabric. It is applied with dope on the frame, shrinked with iron and sealed with dope. Like in the good old days..;-)
On its there is a 2 components car paint. The stripes are 1/16 white strips from Goldberg. The circle partitions are cut from white sticking film. Oh that was a long job...
The result is extremly robust and spans like a drum. I heard similar polyester covering material is used also in the normal light airplanes.

About the motor rpm, I have no data for the moment, its still in break in phase.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
That's exactly, what I'm going to use on mine.
Koverall and a car paints.
I was wonder how you did the white strips.
I thought you're just used a masking tape and left it not painted.
btw, what car paints have you used? The spray one or two component paints mixed at the shop?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Thanks for all the info. As a matter of interest did you install the servos as shown on the plan or did you locate the elevator and rudder servos to the tail?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
There are 2 low profile servos (JR 7421) in the tail for each elevator side.
Ruder servo is installed like in the plans, Hitec HS645MG.
Some weight (3 ozs.) is added in the tail to keep the CG whithin the range.
Happy & crashfree 2007 !!

Thanks for posting your plane. It looks great! I really feel that the 1/3 Spacewalker is an under appreciated plane. It really looks great when scaled out and flys great!

Hey Don,
Even though I am putting a G-38 in mine, I have to agree with you. A nice running twin does sound awesome!

I have flown a friend of mine at my fields with a Saito 270 in his. Man, talk about a sweet sound[sm=thumbs_up.gif]. If I didn't have so many other little projects floating around, I would save my pennies and pick up a nice twin. But at almost 1/4 the price of a twin, I will have to stick with the G-38

Was that a 1/3 Spacewalker you flew with the 270 ? How did it perform ?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Yep, my friend (actually the guy who trained me) purchased the 1/3 Spacewalker at a really great price earlier this year decked out in the standard yellow and red colors. He had one about 9 - 10 years ago he used to compete with. He refurbed the one he just bought and worked a little on the engine. The plane and engine are a great pair!!! It sounds so realistic floating down the runway during low passes. The power is great, not over powered, not underpowered. It also has a little to spare. It is a great flying plane. I just need to get off of my butt and finish mine. We would like to have both of them flying during our annual June Scale fly-in. That would be a great sight!

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
The instruction manual for the 1/3 Spacewalker calls for the rounding of ALL of the edges on the elevators, stabilizer, fin and rudder. Has anyone actually done this?
Surely the trailing edge of the fin and stabilizer can remain square--- wouldn't it look better?
I would love to see some pics of the tail feather of some completed models as a comparison.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I think my 1/3 Spacewalker is 16 years old now. Built it pretty much like the plans called for. Power is an OS 300. Sig Koverall & dope finish - had to macth the colors. Flies real gentle. If I was doing another one, I would use a DA50 or Brillelli 46. Yes, the twin sounds good, but I can go thru several gallons of fuel in an outing & have all kinds of oily mess to clean up. Yes, would use dope again, but this time I would spray an undercoat of silver. I have a set of Shatorlee <sp> landing gear - don't know if he sells them anymore - but I don't like what comes with the plane. I used 1/16 striping tape - would not do that again - I would either learn how to pinstripe or have it done.
