Default Modeltech 1/3rd Scale Cub?

Hey Guys,

I got a friend whose looking at the new Modeltech 1/3rd scale Piper Cub which can be seen here:

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/121200.asp

Any one heard anything about it? Any flight reports?
Also what engine are we talking? He wants a Pegasus 4cyl.. which is around 53cc.. The page states the plane needs a 45-50cc gasser.. Will this be nenough or does he need like a Zenoah G62?

Thanks guys.

There are 2 members in my club and they both have this plane. One is flying it with a quadra 52 and the other is flying it with the brison 3.2 (50cc) gassers. And in my opinion cause I've seen them both fly numerouse times they are both overpowered! I'm not sure what engine your talking about but a 53cc glow should be plenty(you will need a large fuel tank!!!). I am going to be ordering one and putting the G62 on it because I have one lying around.

Well I don't have the one from Modeltech but I do have the 1/4 scale ARF from Dave Patrick. I don't think it could get any better, even for $100.00 more. The Dave Patrick Cub is very well built and very scale. Just read all the reveiws and magazine articles on it. I haven't seen the Modeltech version yet but from reading their ad I doubt if it can compare.

What you are looking at is the old Byron J3 Cub. The plane is built off of Hostetler plans and is slightly under 1/3 scale. 30% to be exact. Even the picture they are using is the same as Byron used.

I have the Byron Cub and fly it with an OS Pegasus 240 w/ a 20x8 prop. My plane flies exceptionally scale w/ little power to spare. This plane is also very heavy mine weighing 35 lbs. All in all a very nice plane and very rugged. The gear is not that great but gets the job done. Hope that helps

Hey. I have been trying to find out what the modeltech 1/3 scale cub is covered in. Hobby People say it is in monokote and chief aircraft in Oregon says it is fabric covered and they also said they couldn't get any models until the middle of January. Does anyone know what the cub is covered with. Thanks.

If you get one it would be a crime not to install some scale landing gear.

The Robart gear will not work on this plane. This plane at 30% is slightly smaller than 1/3 scale and gear will be to big for the bottom of the fuse. I already tried this and found out, luckily before buying it that it will not work.

The mounting width on the Robart doesn't look fixed. Looks like you can moved them a bit closer without changing the geometry too much. Just my impression from studying the dimensional drawing.

I have had several conversations over the phone with Robart and there interpretation is that they will not work. Changing the geometry won't work because the cross member at the top is tack welded and really cannot change. They would have to do something custom to make one work. Rough price of about $350.00 A little to much for me to spend. I would suggest calling Hostetler plans, that is the model this cub is built on. They may have a source for a scale gear.

$350 is steep but a large Cub with stock aluminum gear is pitiful, and in some states illegal.

Bruce,
Swenson does not make the larger gears anymore. I begged and pleaded, but to no avail. Even offered to pay more money, but no chance. Options are somewhat limited.

Yea i know why they wont hold up to a 30 lb plane. I sent mine back 2 times because they would keep bending the alum struts and gear. They never did work right just to much weight. It is to bad Wallace Gears doesnt make the bigger ones but i dont think they do. I dont even know it he is still in business. I still use his on my quarter scale sig cub. They were made out of chrome molley and are strong. Well after hearing about Swenson i guess i wont get another big cub. Mine was one of the original Byron cubs that i got back in 1990. It is the same plane today . I put mine in last year on take off. Ok thanks alot for the information.

Bruce,
I have the Byron one as well. For a first generation ARF, the plane is very nice. Heavy, but nice. Very sturdy airframe. Mine weighs in at 35 lbs. with a OS pegasus 240. Scale flight is amazing. No power to spare and that is how I like it. Nothing like a slow fly by and hear tha flat four four banger going to town. Keep the faith, go ahead and get another one.

Hey, Are you guys thinking the landing gear that comes with this model-tech 1/3 scale cub is not going to last very long? How much does this plane weigh?

Lewy,
I am not thinking that, I am telling you that. I can speak from experience. I have the Byron Cub, which is the exact same plane. It is a very heavy plane. Mine weighs in at 35 lbs. with a OS pegasus 240. No matter whether I grease it in or bounce a couple. I have to remove the gear every five or six flights to rebend the gear and axles.

Go to Hostetler Plans website (do a search) and click on accessories. This plane is built off of his plans for the 30% cub. Go to cub section and they give a source for a landing gears. I believe it is likes line. My advice, great plane, throw the gear out though.

The landing gear that comes with the plane works fine. Just set it up the way they tell you to. I have this plane and I've flown it at least fifty flights and the landing gear is in as good of shape as the day I mounted it. My plane is probably in the 30# range. Dmac
