Maudib- When you gong to fly that thing ? The weather here in MN is starting to get nice. Afew more days and all this snow will be about gone. KY should be pretty decent by now. I envy all of the southern boys and thier decent winter weather.

Today Scott! Yippee!

We got 65 degree weather AND 5-10 mph winds... a buddy is going to meet em there this afternoon and hopefully we'll get some video.

We've got rain forecasted thsi weekend... but a great week ahead... looks like some flying is in my future...

Well guys... I'm back from the field and got a video uploaded...

O.K. First... if anyone says how bad I sucked at flying today... I'll have to... well.. agre with them!

It's been since last July since I was able to fly... it sure felt good but SOOOOO many aspects kept me on edge... first flight in 9 months... somewhat windy, new radio, new plane, new engine, new field, several "strangers" watching, one eye about squinted closed... and I just didn't feel my best... real tired.

BUT... overall it wasn't too bad... I got a couple flights in and could feeel the rust shaking loose... can't wait for early next week when the weather is supposed to rock...

O.K. enough excuses about "poor me"

Flight report:

Brillelli 60... a really nice engine... great work Scott... I look forward to adding some more to my hangar.

Starts easy (when you don't have a baggie wrapped over the velocity stack... doon't ask... tee hee) transition is great... I mean really slick... the first part of the video is the engine being goosed... spool on this 22x8 Laminated prop is FAST...

I still have it set a bit rich but will lean it out at the field next time...

Power is great... The first two clips are takeoffs... you MIGHT think the engine sounds like it sags a bit right after take off,,, but that's me on the throttle... I wanted to slow it down so the climb was the engine not momentum... I was VERY impressed... there is no lack for power... and I'm not on the optimal prop yet (need a good 23x8 on there)

But it would just go and go and go...

The surfaces on this plane are extremely authoritative. No need for anywhere NEAR what you can get for high rate except for hovering and high alpha stuff. It's too much for flatspins and such as they just overpower the maneuver and flop out... SO I'll be setting them back a bit until I get what I like.

I rough set my CG at 3/4" behind the wingtube... feels alright but maybe a little far back... but I really can't say... I'm moving up to the back of the wingtube to start... (I do liek a rearward CG... so don't follow my lead unless you too like it that way)

It flies light... but yet not that flitty feel the 87" had... more solid... and I'm sure that's due to the weight difference... I would have to say I like it... but need to get over my jitters and get some confidence built back up in myself before I can really get into the feel of the plane.

I look forward to "getting it know" this one.

http://www.renderwurx.com/onlinepics/dj88yak.wmv

Right click and save target as because I will only keep this up until I get better footage and more confident in myself...

That 60 is really impressive it seems to throw the Yak around really good. I know what you mean about being rusty Maudib my first flight in about 10 months I took out my Raptor. You want to talk about being shaky![:'(] It sounded like you still had a pretty good wind going as well so I think you did a great job flying.

Looks very nibble....definetly not a problem with weight there wing loading wise....doesn't even sound like your pushing the throttle that much....when you did that little hover, sounded like you were only goosing the throttle from idle 30-40% ...

Very nice. I like the sound of that engine. Was that the Slimline on it for the flight? Also engine sounds a tad rich on the low end. Didn't seem to hesitate on the transition though. I'd stay with the 22x8 on that engine even though it can pull a 23x8. I like how fast it transitions with that 22x8 wood prop.

It is rich... and believe it or not it transitions that well with a 24x8! (Just doesn't wind out) It's got some good low end torque for aure...

I'm going to run about a gallon through it and then switch to Pennzoil Air Cooled and a 23x8... and see where I'm at...

Based on what you describe below, could the B60 be in the power band of a da-50?

We break in the DAs on 22x8 pretty aggressive props and move to a strong 23x8 after a few gallons.

RPM Is around the same numbers you list so far - 6600s.

ORIGINAL: Maudib

Well I got some fuel through the B60... about a tank... fiddling with the needles and such... unfortunately, my tach was suspect... jumping a bit from time to time for no apparent reason.

The engine was easy to start... it drew fuel REALLY well from dry lines... just 5-6 flips.

It popped after about 5 flips first attempt...and then started after 4 flips. From then on it pretty much started warm on 1 flip. (except whn I got the needles too lean and it wan't getting enough fuel to go...

It seems relatively smooth... I can't say any moreso than the DA50... but quite good...

FYI to all who may not know this. If you want to figure out what the maxium prop speed should be for any given prop use this formula
3.14x diam. of prop in inches / 576000 for a 22' prop no mater what pitch the max RPM would be 8338 and a 23" prop would be 7995 if you exceed these values all kind of bad things may happen.

Transition is very nice.... I must say I AM impressed with the throttle response... Once dialed in it's crisp and without any noticable burbling in the midrange at all...

I tried the 23 3Da first and could immediately hear that it wasn't winding out...I tweaked the needles and played around until everything was where it needed to be.

Again the tach was acting squirrelly (pretty overcast) but it would read about 6100-6200... THis prop actually weighed a little more than the 24x8 so for kicks I tried it... Still didn't wind out... and sounded about and read about the same.

I don't think the numbers are too far off going by ear... I was guessing about 6300-6400... but either way these props are too much load for sure.

I have a 22x8 but the prop bolt bottomed out before I could get it tightened... which really bums me because that leaves me still not knowing where I want to be.

While I was "pie in the sky" hoping I could get somethign decent from the 23/24" props I wasn't really expecting it... if they are getting 7000 with a 23x8 on a tuned pipe... well I just couldn't hope to get very close without one.

Because the props sounded nearly the same and the 24x8 really spun about what I expected... I'd say the 23 3Da might be z pretty heavy load.

So my goal at this point is to get the 22x8 on there and fly it until the engine has a gallon through it, then experiment again with the 23" props... Myabe a regular 23x8...

A lot of this is still somewhat "up in the air" because I really am not happy about how the tach was acting... I'm going to see if I can get a couple others to test against.

Something I did notice was the spool up on both props was really nice... even though they were loading the engine up pretty good. Great transition... With a 22x8 it ought to be smokin' fast spool up... but it needs to be over 7000 rpm's before I'll be truly in love. 7200 and it'll be a powerhouse for this aircraft...

I'd liek to see about 6800 with a "regular" 23x8... but then again... I'm old enough to where my "wants" won't hurt me...

FYI For any of you that may not know this here is the formula to figure max RPM on any prop no matter what pitch it is.

Prop diam. in inches x 3.14/576000. Thus a 22' prop would be 8538 and a 23" would be 7995 RPM if you exceed these values many bad things can happen.
But most won't exceed these numbers on a 60cc engine.

Multiply your diam. of prop by 3.14 get that number and divid it into 576000 not 57600

22x3.14=69.08 69.08/576000=8338.

I think it's time for a math refresher course.[8D] 576000/69.08=8338.

What bad things? the end of the world, maybe a portal opens and a midget jumps out and repeatedly kicks you in the nads till he cant lift his leg any more, Or maybe your forced to live with your mother in law for 25 years with absolutely no way to end your live.

Those are just a few of the little ones, some of the others are prop slivers in the eyes, neck, throat, the famliey jewels if you are on the ground and just maybe you loose your beloved plane[&o]

Absolutely awesome. I have never seen a model go as high Alpha as that and all with such stability. Yes you have a top pilot at the controls but if you look at the surfaces there is barely any correction.

I love the sound of that Brillelli on that pipe too. I hope mine will sound as good on the DA.

Sorry spod too late mate. I would not be able to save you anything anyway. All of the ES stuff is pretty specialist at the moment so I don't think Ed is in a position to deal with trade, I wish he did

Give him a shout though, you know you need one
