RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Lets see, i think i had to modify the landing gear hole a bit. not a big deal though if I remember.
Camss69, I have to admit i've been putting my time on it too. I used a choke servo, I put it right next to my throttle servo. both are on a removeable tray I made. I am not using rf filters. Tail wheel setup is pretty simple on mine. I should probably make it stearable, but for now, since I fly off the grass it's just free spinning.
I'll try to upload pictures tonight, especially if I maiden today. Looks promising.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Ok guys. I literally just got back from the field and YES, I got to maiden it.
a little background....I ended adding about 8oz of lead to get it to balance out at 95-100mm. I was a bit chicken to fly it at 115mm. Didn't re-weigh it but i think i'm close to 26 by now.
So, first the muffler fell off while I was warming it up and doing preflight. I thought that was a bad omen but, after that things went pretty smooth. Except the landing.
The ZDZ 80 performed very well....take off was brisk. and the 80 was plenty to give it unlimited vertical. My uplines weren't dead straight so I'll probably have to add some right thrust in. Maybe some down as well. or would it be up? Anyways,... A couple clicks for the ailerons, everything else was dead on. Knife edge was pretty good. My one 8711 on the rudder seemed plenty strong. Rolls were pretty axial but I have to admit I was babying it a bit on the first flight. I did notice that it seemed to fly a little slower than my Bvm edge when throttled down. For some reason my engine wasn't throttling down all the way though, so landing was a bit of a bummer. I ended up killing the motor with the choke at the end of my last good approach to get it to slow down enough so I didn't overshoot our small runway.
Sorry I can't report more for now. But I only got one flight in. Off to pack for Joe Nall. Leaving tomorrow. See you there.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Landing was very predictable once I shut it down. It settled right in with no problems. I set everything up per the instruction manual and flew the maiden on high throws. The only thing I didn't have was the throw that the book wanted on the ailerons. Mine seemed a bit stiff and i was probably only at about 3/4 of what they suggest on high rates. I think KE loop would be no problem with one 8711. I wish I could get another flight in before I leave but it's very windy here today. Sorry.

As soon as I get some decent weather, and home from work in time, she's ready to go.
I ended up around 100mm or so for balance, I'm running the recommended throws, on everything except rudder where I'm maxed out due to the length of the servo arm.

Well, if your building this bird your gonna love it!
I got 4 flights in today, everything went great, with my setup she's a floater, harriers were rock solid, rolling stuff was pretty incredible, she flies as slow and stable as you could want. Snaps start and stop instantly, knife edge took hardly any rudder at all. In fact I was in a hurry to get out there and didn't even put in the mixes they recommend in the manual for knife edge and she tracked great, just a touch of up and a touch aileron. Knife edge loops with the single 8711 are no problem. I didn't try too much hovering high power slow stuff because the motor only has the 4 flights on it, but it looked like she was going to hover at under 1/3 throttle. Landings were a bit tricky because I'm not used to a plane that floats like this one does and it took a few tries before she set down all so easy.
I eyeballed the aileron differential at 10% and she had just the slightest wobble you could hardly notice. With the balance at 100mm I would recommend 40 to 50% expo on the recommended low rate elevator, she was pretty touchy on the first flight. I would also take out a little of the aileron expo they were a little slow for my taste as recommended.
I could listen to that screatching comp-arf noise all day long, mixed in with a little DA 100 on stock muffs.... ahhh yeah......
Thanks to Robb and Jason for the help at the field today!

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
flew again today. I got some real time on it. This plane hovers easy. Harriers were solid. Knife edge pulled pretty hard to the belly. I'll have to put in some mix. Andy Kane flew it at Joe Nall last week and thougt maybe I didn't have the ailerons set as good as they could be. He thought it could roll more axial. I'll have to check on that. The zdz 80 runs this plane just great. Plenty of power. Uplines were pretty straight without any thrust added. Landed without a problem. It does float though. Takes some gettin used to. Can't wait to get some time on her. Will report more then.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
I have 8 flights on mine now, it will roll perfectly axial if you get the differential right. Interesting that yours pulls to the belly so much, mine pulls just slightly, I'm going to try and get the mix in before I go out next. Do you have any thrust set in the engine now? I'm running as close as I could get to what they recommend a degree of up and 3 to the right or something. The one thing I seem to be lacking is rudder throw, at the top of a hammerhead I have to blip the throttle to get her around. Another guy at the field mentioned moving the clevis on the rudder arms in 1/4" at a time until I get what I want. Right now I'm just about *****g out the stock throw on the rudder and it doesn't seem like it's enough. Another thing a couple of guys that are real familiar with comp-arf's mentioned was to install a tiller arm for the rudder so that the pull-pull cables pull on the arm, and not the rudder servo gear train, mounting screws, and servo arm. They both mentioned it independently of each other so it sounds like a pretty good idea.
I'm still working on the landings, it seems like this plane goes real fast real easy and it floats so it's hard to get her slowed down for landing. The slightest little decent while on final and she seems to shoot right by. I guess the good thing with that is that it sure makes rolling slow 3d much easier than a 50cc plane. This is my first 35% plane so a lot of my observations may be a bit off compared to other 35% planes, this is the only one I've flown.
My only complaint so far is that compared to a 50cc plane these are much more of a PITA to haul to the field and take up way more space in the garage.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Great reports guys. I am very anxious to fly mine. Will probably be a month or so before it is ready.
I am still very interested in your AUWs. I hear some are coming in around 23 and 24lbs. I hope that is true but it is hard for me to believe after reading this thread. So if you are ever able to weight them I would really appreciate it.
Thanks again for the flight reports.

I have been using a 2 servo rudder tray with a 4 inch bell crank with only one 8711. Seems to work well. My auw is very close to 25lbs 8oz. This plane definately hovers easier than my edge with the c/g at 100mm. Here's one of mine at Joe Nall.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Hi Guys,
I just finished my 260 in the Kiwi scheme. I am using the DA100 on MTW cans. The CG was right at 95mm with the ignition battery and one of the receiver battery packs in the nose. This is definitely a tail heavy bird. I have yet to weigh it, but as I expected, it feels heavier than my 300SX. I am using one 8711 per wing, two 8611s on the rudder with the tray in the forward position, and 8611s on the elevators. Weather permitting I will maiden tomorrow.

Let us know how you like it!
I'd be really interested in hearing a comparison between the 260 and your SX since that was one of the planes I was choosing from when I bought this one.
I put another couple flights on it today, the DA is still breaking in, it's getting better with every flight it seems, I'm at around 10 or 11 flights I think, conditions weren't that good with wind around 17mph, the 260 handled it fine, it seemed like it hardly noticed actually.

RE: Comp-Arf Extra 260 2.6m Q's/Build
Got four flights on it this morning. I was impressed with the performance given what I believe to be a weight difference favoring the 300SX. With the new engine running 32:1 Pennzoil and a 27 X 10 prop I had unlimited vertical. She is rock solid and tracks tighter than the 300SX. Up line was straight with offset provided by only two washers behind the stand offs. I was surprised how much she pulled to the belly on knife edge in both directions. I believe that the 300SX pulled less. Down line pulled a tad towards the canopy, way better than the 300SX. Snaps were crisp and rolls axial. I am happy with the CG where it is. Will put more flights on it to make sure that the thrust line and CG are truly where I want them and then will mix out the coupling. Needless to say, I am very happy with the 260.
