I'm setting up a 33% Extra with 8411 all around and I will like to hear from those of you that have planes this size and are not using matcboxes if it is too difficult to set the plane properly without using the matcboxes.
2 servos on each ail and 2 on rudder.
Thanks

I have a Hangar Nine 1/3 scale Extra 330L with two 8411's per wing and two on rudder. I used a matchbox on the rudder but I selected four servos and matched the MLP Airwild servo arms that I had to get the geometry correct for the aileron servos. It took some time to get the linkage right. It is possible but a pain. Digitals sure would rob power and kill some battery packs if you let them fight each other!

I just setup a 40% Carden Extra, and I did it without matchboxes the first time. I am using Futaba 9206 servos--2 in each aileron and 2 in each elevator. Because I never could get the servo arms matched perfectly, I always had a little buzzing at extreme throws. With 8411's (which I have on other planes), this would be BAD. So I decided to bite the bullet and get 4 matchboxes (my 2 rudder servos are mixed in the transmitter).
If I were you, I would use 2 matchboxes--one on each aileron. Mount them in the wing root so that you only have 1 extension to plug into the receiver from each wing. You can pick up the matchboxes at RCSuperstore for $44 with free shipping. Not a bad deal! And your 8411's will really be happy.

I've matched servos in the past. It's a real pain and you'll never get it perfect. Matchboxes are great. They're easy to set-up and give you perfect results. I'll be using them from now on.

Some folks are able to avoid using them on ailerons by carefully matching the servos and allowing the aileron to flex a bit, but I agree with the others, they are the way to go for digitals (unless you opt for Hitecs and the programmer, as someone will surely point out momentarily), matchboxes just make the setup super easy. There's a pic on my home page of the matchbox in the wing root of my 33% H9 cap, so I can reach it with the wings attached to the fuse. On the rudder, unless you opt for a floating bell crank, you'll either need to EXACTLY match your digital servos, mix two channels on your radio (my preferance for my 33%) or use a matchbox. If you buy matchboxes, check out the twin pack from Horizon, it's cheaper than buying them individually. There's my .02, worth everything you paid for it!
PS - just saw the referance above to RC Superstore - I bought some 8411s from them, they are good guys and $44/matchbox sounds like a great price.

BobPHX and Planefan what transmitter/rx are you guys using. I don't know if I can mix my rudder on two channels. Only Aux 1 and Aux 3 have include mixing so that both channels move with the trim (rudder in this case). I have the 8103 Tx with the 649 rx. I would love to step up to a 10X and have all the mixing capabilities. Kent.

I have a 9z, which makes it fairly easy.. My buddy flies a 8103 and I believe he said it can be done, but it is tricky. I really don't know. For $44 I'd just by the MBox and be done with it.

I've got a 33% FC Extra 330LX and I did not use them on the ailerons ... have had no issues with two 8411's in each wing. Very consistent (and normal) battery drain.
My rudder has 3 ganged 8411's in an SWB tray ... one going into one receiver straight and two going into the other receiver through a matchbox. The single servo is the "master" and I "match" the other two to it using the matchbox. Very easy to setup and I have redundancy on rudder since they go to two separate receivers.
Good luck with yours ...

I am using a mathbox on my rudder but I only bought a pair and thought I'd try mixing the rudder then move the rudder matchbox for use on one wing and use the other matchbox I have sitting in a box on the other wing. I am getting along quite well without the wing matchboxes but wouldn't mind fine tuning the wing panels. My two 2400mAh Lion packs stand up fine to a day at the field so I guess I am not drawing too much amperage.

I been looking at the book on the 8103 and it looks easier to just spend the $44.00. I thought I got a deal at $100.00 for a pair of matchboxes! Eventually I will get a 10x. I really like the conditions switches. Instead of switching the rudder, aileron and elevator d/r switches you can just hit the condition switch to get out of 3D. Still a bit on the $$$$ side for a backyard flyer like myself. I do have a big back yard though.
